Woven Angel Fish Craft

This gorgeous Woven Angel Fish Craft is perfect helping little hands master the process of weaving. The handling and motion of weaving in and out of the fish, is great for fine motor skills and coordination, and the overall effect adds a fun and interesting layer to the craft.

Can you imagine how a collection of these would look on a bulletin board or within an under the sea themed display?

Bubble wrap printing is a process we return to time and time again on Arty Crafty Kids (also, check out our bubble wrap octopus), and here we’re demonstrating how it can be used to create an underwater backdrop.

Simple, effective and a great introduction into mix-media composition.

Woven Angel Fish Craft: Tutorial

Step 1: Paint a large piece of bubble wrap with various shades of blue paint.

This is a great opportunity for Arty Crafty Kids to explore colour mixing; creating light and dark shades of blue.

To create neat and defined bubble wrap print, I would recommend painting the individual bubbles with a paintbrush. However, if your Arty Crafty Kids decide to use big sweeping stroke across the bubble wrap, then that’s perfectly fine too.

Step 2: Turn the bubble wrap over and place it onto the white cardstock.

Press firmly all over the bubble wrap.

Step 3: Gently peel the bubble wrap away from the cardstock to reveal the print.

Step 4: OPTIONAL – to create a layered effect, either use the existing bubble wrap or a fresh piece and paint the bubbles white.

Repeat the above process.

Step 6: Cut the template out.

Trace the fish onto coloured cardstock and cut out.

Using white and black cardstock, cut out two circles to create a big fishy eye!

Step 7: Fold the fish in half and cut slits into the middle of the fish.

Leave at least half of an inch all the way around to avoid tearing the card.

Get creative with this element by adding extra colours, textured or even patterned paper.

Step 9. Weave the coloured paper strips in and out of the fish.

Secure the ends with glue.

Easy Woven Fish Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easy Woven Fish Craft | A fabulous fish craft, with a woven element that adds colour and is great for building fine motor skills. The perfect kids crafts for an Under the Sea unit! #underthesea #easycrafts #kidscrafts #fishcrafts

This delightful Easy Woven Fish Craft is perfect for little hands. The weaving process is great for building on fine motor skills and the results are rather pretty too!

A tactile craft that can be personalised and adapted to suit varying abilities. Very young children may prefer to simply cut and stick paper scales onto their fish. Some could also paint their fish as we have done so with a previous butterfly craft, which looks great against the paper weave and could add another dynamic to the fish – this could work well paired with the book Rainbow Fish.

Paper Butterfly Collage

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Butterly Paper Collage - A simple activity using torn scrap paper to create a colourful, textured butterfly. A wonderful craft for kids! #artycraftykids #recycledcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #kidsart #artideasforkids #easykidsactivities

Collage art is a wonderful medium for kids to explore. The process of breaking one object (in this instance paper) to create a new whole naturally lends itself to encouraging creative thinking and developing problem-solving skills. With the aide of our butterfly template or hand-drawn shape, children will be measuring and calculating how each individual piece with fit into the available space, and of course, with creating a butterfly, there’s the additional challenge of symmetry. No matter how big or small your Arty Crafty Kids are, this project is adaptable and perfect for all! And they will be guaranteed to have the best time creating their Paper Butterfly Collage.

To extend the activity, I like to challenge my own Arty Crafty Kids to create with just one magazine.

This is great for creativity and encourages kids (and adults!) to think outside of the box with respect to adding colour and texture to their collages. For example, an image of a woolly jumper can more than just the end product. Take a look at the thickness of wool, the stitch, and shapes. The same applies to furnishings, nature images, food and so on – If you look closely at our example butterfly, you may spot a familiar face!

Paper Butterfly Collage: Materials

Stock Card
PVA Glue
Scrap Paper, Newspaper or Magazine

Our butterfly template is accessible via the Arty Crafty Kids membership club, where a huge variety of templates can found as well as colouring pages, how-to-draw guides, DIY cards and much more!

Paper Butterfly Collage: Tutorial and Video

To see the process in action, take a look at our nifty video tutorial below.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Butterly Paper Collage - A simple activity using torn scrap paper to create a colourful, textured butterfly. A wonderful craft for kids! #artycraftykids #recycledcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #kidsart #artideasforkids #easykidsactivities

Step 1: Delve into the recyling bin or/and craft supplies and gather a variety of scrap paper.

Either download the template from our membership area or ask your Arty Crafty Kids to create their own shape.

Print or draw the shape onto a piece of white card stock. This is really important, as the process is very sticky and paper will just get too soggy and potentially spoil your child’s gorgeous creation. Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Butterly Paper Collage - A simple activity using torn scrap paper to create a colourful, textured butterfly. A wonderful craft for kids! #artycraftykids #recycledcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #kidsart #artideasforkids #easykidsactivities

Step 2: Begin filling the butterfly with torn shreds of paper.

Your Arty Crafty Kids may prefer to cut their paper with scissors.

With each application, adds lots of glue, spreading it across the existing paper to secure all the edges.

Once this dry, this will leave a lovely gloss over the paper and make it quite hard to touch. Perfect if you’re likely to frame the collaged art!

Step 3: Continue filling the shape with a variety of colours and textures.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Butterly Paper Collage - A simple activity using torn scrap paper to create a colourful, textured butterfly. A wonderful craft for kids! #artycraftykids #recycledcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #kidsart #artideasforkids #easykidsactivities

Step 4: Once the shape is complete, add one final spread of glue across the entire picture and leave the butterfly to dry!

The Paper Butterfly Collage is now complete!

I hope your Arty Crafty enjoy the process of creating their paper butterflies.

Curly Paper Plate Lion Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Curly Paper Plate Lion Craft

We LOVE lion crafts here at Arty Crafty Kids and have revamped our Mixed Media Lion to create a fresh Paper Plate Lion Craft with a fabulously curly mane.

Kids will relish the process of cutting, curling and sticking to form their lion’s bouncy mane, that will naturally lend itself to inspiring some magical creative play.

With just a shake shake shake, the rustle and movement will bring the lion to life and have Arty Crafty Kids roaring like a lion in no time!

So if you’re planning a trip to the zoo anytime soon, reading any lion themed books or covering animals as a topic within the classroom, then this is a great extension activity that will inspire creativity and imaginations.

Curly Paper Plate Lion Craft: Tutorial and Video

To the see the process in action, take a quick look at our Video demonstration!

Now that you’ve seen the video, let me tell you the best bit about this Paper Plate Lion Craft – it’s adaptable!

No matter how big or small your kids’ hands are, they will find a way to make it their own.

Younger Arty Crafty Kids, may prefer to skip the curling element and add the paper as it is and others may choose a mixture of techniques. As well as curled, the paper could also folded in accordian style ( see our Mixed Media Unicorn) or even scrunched up!

However your children choose approach this craft, the end result will be the same – PERFECT!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Curly Paper Plate Lion Craft

Step 1: Using a sponge, paint the paper plate by lightly dabbing the surface and blending the colours.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Curly Paper Plate Lion Craft

Step 2: Cut the into strips, varying the width (and length if desired).

Using the end of a paint brush or pen/pencil, wrap each strand of paper around the utensil to create a tight coil.

Remove the paper by sliding the coil off the paintbrush and let naturally unravel.

Step 3: Following the circumference of the paper plate, glue each strand of paper into the paper plate leaving a gap in-between each.

Be generous with the application of PVA glue to ensure each strand is securely stuck!

Step 4: Repeat the process of Step.3, filling in the gaps of the outer layer and then added a second layer to give the mane some extra bounce and body.

Step 5: Complete the lion by adding a black nose, a pair of googly eyes and string for whiskers.
