Step 2: To create a spooky ambience, this project explores and plays with twilight tones and hues; these include red, violet, blue, aqua green, yellow, orange and black.

Your Arty Crafty Kids can start from any point, however, I would recommend starting from the central circle with a warm colour and progressing to outer circles with cooler shades of blues and violet.

Step 3: Starting with a bright and solid yellow shade, add a small amount of red to yellow to create a lighter shade of orange.

Increase the mix of red to yellow to darken the orange.

Step 4: From orange, introduce a light pink shade and graduate to a solid dark red.

Throughout the project encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and engage in a process of trial and error to create their desired shades.

Discussion Points:

  • How do you make the colour lighter or darker?
  • How many shades of orange or red can you create?
  • Can you make the same colour twice?

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Circle Art for Halloween. Explore cool and warm shades with this simple template design. Perfect Art Project for kids exploring colour mixing and colour shades #artforkids #kidsart #halloween

Step 5: Continue filling the circles working from Yellow to Violet (warm to cool) until complete.

Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

The artist Wassily Kandinsky is a favourite here at Arty Crafty Kids and today I have the pleasure of publishing the third instalment to our growing collection of Kandinsky Inspired Art Projects – ‘Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art’ .

Farbstudie Quadrate (squares with concentric circles) is one of Kandinsky’s most recognisable pieces and was created as a personal colour chart. Kandinsky believed you could express feelings through colours and shapes, and claimed to see lines and colours while listening to music. As such, he often painted to music; squares with concentric circles (and much of his work) is a reflection of that process.

To get your Arty Crafty Kids into the spirit of Kandinsky’s mindset, try playing music as they paint. Does this influence their painting or mood in any way?

Step1: Download our free Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Template and print on to white cardstock or mixed media paper (depends on your Arty Crafty Kids choice of medium).

Choose a medium!

Watercolours work well with this project and is our choice of medium for this tutorial.

Oil pastels, colouring pencils and acrylic paint are all good options and depending on the age group of your Arty Crafty Kids, they may prefer to challenge their mixing and blending skills (oil pastels) or keep it simple (colouring pencils).

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 2: Set an aim…

To create a spooky ambience, this project explores and plays with twilight tones and hues; these include red, violet, blue, aqua green, yellow, orange and black.

Alternatively, Arty Crafty Kids may prefer to explore Autumn colours or experimenting with contrasting and complementary colours. It’s entirely up to them and it’s important to allow the kids to guide the project.

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 3: Once your Arty Crafty Kids have an aim, let’s explore the colour palette!

If the aim is to create a spooky tree, ask them to think about the colours they associate with ‘Twilight’ or dusk and dawn.

Next, add colour. Using the circles as a guide, create a ring of one colour within the outline and then add a second ring and third with additional colours.

Continue until the circle is complete.

The colours can blend or remain solid and independent.

They can complement or contrast each other – the decision is your Arty Crafty Kids and there’s really no right or wrong

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 4: Once the circle is complete, fill in the remaining white space with one bold colour and then move onto the next.

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 5: Within each circle, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to explore different colour combinations.

How many different colour combinations can they make?

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 6: Continue painting the circles within the grid until it’s full and bursting with colour!

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids have enjoyed creating their own Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art.

Upon completion (and sometimes throughout the process – this will depend on your Arty Crafty Kids as it’s sometimes best not to disturb an artist in the zone!), it’s important to chat about the finished piece and the process.

Here are a few conversation starters and discussion points:

  • Tell me about your art.
  • How did you choose the colours?
  • How did you make that shade of …. ?
  • How would you describe the colours you have used?
  • What’s your favourite colour combination and why?

Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

This Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft has been designed with preschoolers and very young children in mind. The process of tearing, scrunching, rolling and sticking is wonderful for fine motor skills (or dexterity).

Fine motor skills refer to the coordination of small muscles within the hands, wrists and fingers that are essential for picking objects up and writing.

Crafts that involve a simple and repetitive process, such as our cute little pumpkin craft, give those fine motor skills a fabulous workout.

Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 1: Download the template from our members’ area or create your own.

Print the template on to good quality paper or white cardstock. Preschoolers are often generous with their glue application. Cardstock tends to be much better at absorbing the excess and prevents the craft turning into a soggy mess!

Begin tearing tissue paper and rolling/scrunching into balls.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 2: Coat a section of the template in a thin layer of PVA glue (liquid form or glue stick) and stick the balls of tissue paper within the pumpkin template.

The size of the tissue paper balls is wholly dependent on your preschooler. They may like teeny tiny balls or big open scrunchy ones – both options are perfect!

Notice from the picture the use of the pincer grip. Without even thinking about it, your infants and preschoolers will be strengthening their little muscles and improving their coordination throughout the craft.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 3: Continue filling the pumpkin with tissue paper.

Encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to follow the lines of the pumpkin template and fill the white space by placing the tissue paper balls as closley together as possible.  This is great for hand-eye coordination!

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 4: Keep going until the pumpkin is completely full!

OPTIONS:

We love to give our Arty Crafty Kids choice and filling the pumpkin template with tissue paper is just one option!

Here are a few extra ideas:

  • For older children, take the magazine challenge! This involves using the paper from one magazine and filling the template with torn paper. This adds texture to the finished piece and Arty Crafty Kids use their creativity repurposing prints and images to create art. Example: Butterfly Collage
  • Sticking to a collage theme, perhaps paint the pumpkin template in its appropriate colours first and ask your Arty Crafty Kids to find matching coloured items (buttons, sequins, tissue paper etc) to fill the pumpkin.

These ideas can be applied to many of the templates on offer within the Arty Crafty Kids members area and can be downloaded as many times as you like!

Silhouette Halloween Art: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 1: Download your selected template and print.

We have six templates available, including a spider, witches hat, haunted house, bats, ghost and black cat.

These can be accessed within the Arty Crafty Kids online membership area or you can download a freebie via the sign-up form found towards the end of this post.

Step 2: Cut the chosen shape out.

The templates have been designed to encourage Arty Crafty Kids to practice their cutting skills. The smooth lines and simple shapes are perfect for little hands to navigate and their extra large shapes allow for mishaps.

The spider template is a little trickier and would recommend allowing some additional white space around the legs (as shown above).

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 3: Cut out any extras.

Eyes for the ghost.

Windows and doors for the haunted house.

A buckle and holes to suggest stripes on the witches hat.

And any other extras your Arty Crafty Kids fancy adding.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 4. Place the silhouette onto a piece of black cardstock.

Apply white paint (ideally acrylic) to the sponge and begin gently dabbing the paint around the silhouette outline.

With each silhouette, start with white. This not only creates a bold and striking contrast against the black, but it also acts as a good base layer for other colours.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 5: Add a second colour.

As per the previous step, follow the outline of the silhouette and extend further into the black space.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 6: Continue to add additional colours.

Your Arty Crafty Kids may begin to notice that some colours will change as they layer and blend. This is a great opportunity to talk about colour mixing, inviting the kids to describe the changes they observe.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 7: Once your Arty Crafty Kids are happy with their painting, gently peel the template away to reveal the silhouette.

Silhouette art is created by painting negative space. To explain this simply, negative space is the area that surrounds the subject or point of interest.

In this instance, our point of interest is the ghost and haunted house.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

It’s a fun and abstract technique, that’s perfect for colour play.

With the ease of ready-mixed paint, it’s tempting to offer the full spectrum of ready-made colours, however, this denies kids the opportunity to experiment, play and ultimately learn through the process of trial and error.

For this reason, our Arty Crafty Boxes and many of our projects focus on the primary colours, with the addition of white and black.

This is to encourage Arty Crafty Kids to explore and develop their colour mixing skills.

And it’s always fun to challenge them to make as many colours as possible, as well as asking simple questions throughout the process:

  • How much yellow and red do you need to make orange?
  • How many shades of blue can you make?
  • What happens when you mix all the colours together?

Autumn Leaf Pop Art

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

The Pop Art movement began in the 1950s and refers to a simple style that is characterised by brightly painted commercial images, such as Andy Warhol’s soup cans and the Shot Marilyns.  It’s a fun colourful art form that’s perfect for children to explore!

Our  Autumn Leaf Pop Art project simplifies the style, encourages colour play and aims to create art that literally “POPS” from the page.

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

This project will introduce the concept of Complementary Colours – Colours that are directly opposite each other on the colour spectrum. When two complementary colours are mixed, they create brown.

https://www.artycraftykids.com/product/arty-crafty-kids-club/

Your Arty Crafty Kids may find it useful to refer to our colour chart. Simply choose a colour from the outer wheel and imagine a line travelling across the circle to the colour opposite. This will be that colours complementary partner.

Autumn Leaf Pop Art: Tutorial

Step 1: Download and print the Leaf Art Grid template (The Sign-up form can be found towards the end of this post).

Using bright Autumn colours, paint the segments.

Try to alter the order of colours and shades throughout the grid. As you see from our example, we’ve used a small palette of colours with some segments complementing their neighbour, while others clash.

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

Step 2: Head outside and gather a collection of leaves.

If your Arty Crafty Kids intend to remain within the segments, then be mindful about leaf size.

That said, there are options! Your Arty Crafty Kids may prefer larger leaves that overlap across the page. Perhaps they could use just a single leaf and create one large print.

This post is designed as a demonstration for one technique, however, I’m sure your Arty Crafty Kids will have their own ideas and it’s important to run with that creativity.

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

Step 3: Let’s paint!

For best results, use acrylic paint and apply with a brush.

When it comes to printing, less is more and detail is easily lost in the excess paint. This will be a process of trial and error for your Arty Crafty Kids, but that’s part of the fun!

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

Step 4: With each leag, press the painted side down firmly onto the grid and gently move your finger across the leaf, pressing down around the edges.

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

Step 5: Peel the leaf away from the grid to reveal the print.

With each print, select a different complementary colour to make the leaf POP  from the page.

If your Arty Crafty Kids need assistance with their colour choices, refer to the colour wheel. They should also be encouraged to experiment for themselves.

My own daughter had her own ideas and prefered to use the same coloured print for every segment, which is equally as effective and a great learning exercise with respect to understanding how colours work together.

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

Step 6: Continue the process until the grid is full of leaf prints!

Arty Crafty Kids - Autumn Leaf Pop Art project for kids, with a free template included! #autumncraft #kidsart #artforkids #kidsactivities #craftsforkids

I hope you’re Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Autumn Leaf Pop Art!

These pieces look amazing framed and even better with multiple pop art projects using different leaf prints and colours. Can you imagine how an Autumn Leaf Pop Art display could look?

Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

To create our Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art, we followed the tips and tutorials within our good friend’s (Samantha Sarles from Color Made Happy) new book The Rock Art Handbook!

If you and your children love painting rocks, then this book is worth checking out. It’s jam-packed with easy to follow tutorials, inspiring ideas and the end results are beautiful.  Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art – Tutorial

Step 1: Begin by thoroughly washing the rocks.

Allow the rocks to dry before progressing to the next stage.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Step 2: Using white acrylic paint, create a smooth base layer.

Leave the paint to dry. Luckily, acrylic paint tends to dry quickly!

With a dry base layer, let’s add colour!

The Rock Art Handbook is full of fun and unique techniques for creating doodle backgrounds.

Here, we decided to experiment with ombre backgrounds.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

And watercolour paints.

Prior to reading the Rock Art Handbook, watercolour paint is not a medium I would have considered using for decorating rocks.

In this instance, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of application and the beautiful finish!

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Step 3: It’s time to doodle!

Sketch a rough tree design on your painted rock.

Take care not to press too firmly – the lines should be barely visible and NOT the complete design.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkidsStep 4: Using a black Posca pen draw one continuous free-flowing line from the roots of your tree design to the beginning of your first branch.

The the first line is always the most difficult.

Don’t worry if the line doesn’t follow your pencil sketch, remember that’s just a guide. It’s important to relax and allow your hand to flow naturally with the grain of the rock.

Every line, intentional or not, has a purpose and will add to the finished piece.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Step 5: From the trunk of your tree design, create some squiggly lines working their way towards the bottom of the rock.

Allow the lines to spread, twist and curl, filling the space at the base of the rock.

Thicken some of the lines and expand with finer lines curling from the prominent dark lines.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Step 6: Once the roots are complete, repeat the same process to create branches.

By this time, your hand should feel quite relaxed, so try abandoning your pencil sketch and go with the flow, filling the empty space with curling, twisting branches.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

Step 7: Add some detail!

This could take the form of leaves or simple dots in an alternative colour.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art - Rock Painting Ideas for Kids #rockpainting #rockart #kidsart #easyartforkids

And at this point, you can decide when your Tree of Life Inspired Rock Art is complete!

Rainbow Silhouette Leaf Art: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Rainbow Silhouette Leaf Art for Kids, with 4 downloadable templates available #kidsart #leafart #autumncraft #printable

Step 1. Let’s make a Rainbow!

This is a great opportunity for Arty Crafty Kids to explore the magic and wonder of colour-mixing, and for this reason, I would always recommend that Arty Crafty Kids only paint with the primary colours with black and white.

https://www.artycraftykids.com/product/arty-crafty-kids-club/

With the ease of ready-mixed paint, it’s tempting to offer the full spectrum of ready-made colours, however, this sadly denies kids the opportunity to experiment, play and ultimately learn through the process of trial and error.

So, with access to the primary colours only, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to make as many colours as possible!

Ask questions throughout the process:

  • How much yellow and red do you need to make orange?
  • How many shades of blue can you make?
  • What happens when you mix all the colours together?

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Rainbow Silhouette Leaf Art for Kids, with 4 downloadable templates available #kidsart #leafart #autumncraft #printable

Step 2. While the Rainbow Canvas dries,  cut out the leaf silhouettes of your Arty Crafty Kids chosen template(s).

Place the leaves on the canvas and experiment with their arrangement.

Step 3. Now it’s time to make a choice…

Stick the leaf silhouettes directly on to the rainbow background or move onto  Step 4. to create inverted silhouettes.

Alternatively, paint two rainbow canvas’ and do both options.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Rainbow Silhouette Leaf Art for Kids, with 4 downloadable templates available #kidsart #leafart #autumncraft #printable

Step 4. To create inverted silhouettes, simply hold the unstuck leaf template with a finger or two and gently sponge paint around the shape with the other hand.

To contrast against the rainbow background, we’ve used black in our example piece.

For an alternative method, take a look at our Autumn Leaf Painting concept, where we’ve left the background white and added an assortment of colours instead of black.

Step 5. Continue sponge painting around each leaf.

Step 6. And then gently peel the templates away to reveal the inverted leaf silhouettes.

Here, the Arty Crafty Kids are again presented with a choice; the piece could be left complete at this stage with more of the rainbow background revealed or, it could be filled in.

Step 7. To enhance the effect of the inverted silhouette, simply fill in the remaining space surrounding the leaves.  This remaining area is called negative space and simply put, it’s the area that surrounds the subject or point of interest.

In this instance, it’s our leaf silhouettes.

The notion of positive and negative space is naturally explored in this project and one your Arty Crafty Kids will consider without knowing the official terminology or theory – they’ll be too busy doing!

And this concludes the Rainbow Silhouette Leaf Art project.

I would like to end with a thought from my eldest Arty Crafty Kid, Olivia (8):

I really like this project. It lets children use their imaginations and play with rainbow colours.
I love the idea of rainbow leaves, it makes me think of a magical fairy world. A little glitter would really finish off the project!

Autumn Handprint Tree

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Autumn is a gorgeous, colourful season that never fails to get the creative juices flowing and if you’re looking for an opportunity to explore simple colour-mixing techniques within a seasonal theme, then this Autumn Handprint Tree art project is the one for you.

Children can observe the natural change that comes with Autumn and attempt to recreate what they see within their art.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Ask questions:

  • How much Red and Yellow do you need to make Orange?
  • How do you make different tones of Orange (Yellow, Red, Green)?
  • How do you make Brown?

This simple process of trial and error is a fabulous learning exercise, with an emphasis on problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking (mixing and mentally measuring colours to achieve the desired tone).

And of course, it’s wonderful for creativity!

Autumn Handprint Tree Art:  Tutorial

Step 1. Using a pencil, draw a faint line around the hand and arm of your child.

If your child is of preschool age or older, they may want to have a go themselves.

Next, paint the print brown.

Alternatively, simply draw around the arm directly onto a piece of brown paper and cut out the shape and stick.

Step 2. Time for the really fun bit – colour mixing!

This is s chance for kiddos to explore colour by experimenting with primary colours to create Autumn shades of red, yellow, orange and green, oh and of course brown (every toddler can make brown!).

Using a q-tip, end of a pencil or even your child’s finger, begin adding dots around the tree.

Step 3. Build the dots with different colours. Try overlapping the dots and see the print transform into an Autumn Handprint Tree!

Since writing this post in 2015, I have seen hundreds of Autumn Handprint Trees completed by children from all over the world and it’s established itself as a favourite tree art project with teachers!

Thank you for all the amazing feedback. Every photo brings a smile to my face!

Your Arty Crafty Kids may find it useful to refer to this

Basic Colour Chart throughout the process of Cool Handprint Art.

This particular art project offers Arty Crafty Kids with an opportunity to explore and experiment with colour-mixing; mixing beyond the secondary colours to create various shades of their favourite colours!

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 1: Download a template of your choice (the sign-up form can be found towards the end of this post) and print.

Using a pencil, ask your Arty Crafty Kids to draw around their hand as many times as they like.

Create clear single prints or layer, forming crisscrossing hands.

Step 2: Add paint.

To make the most of this colour-mixing opportunity, I would recommend offering your Arty Crafty Kids just Red, Yellow and Blue paint, with White and Black.

Using the colour reference chart, ask your Arty Crafty Kids to play with the colours.

Ask them questions:

What are warm colours?

A: Warm colours are hues from red through yellow – consider the colours in sunsets

What are cool colours?

A: Cool Colours are hues from blue-green through blue-violet – consider the shades of the sea or a twilight setting

To explore the contrast of warm and cool tones, we focussed on the hands as warm and the background as cool.

Mixing Red and Yellow, begin creating the first warm or cool tones.

Step 3: Following both the handprint lines and segmentation of the template, handprint will begin to pop from the page.

Continue colour-mixing and painting until the handprints are complete and then add contrasting hues of blue and green to the background.

Step 4: Continue colour-mixing and experimenting until the paper is filled with beautiful colours.

How many new colours can your Arty Crafty Kids make?

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 5: As well as creating an amazing piece of handprint art, your Arty Crafty Kids will be mentally measuring quantities of paint to create their desired tones and assessing the cause and effect of their choices.

For instance:

How much red and yellow do they need to mix to create orange?

Can they create the same shade twice?

What happens when black or white is added to a primary colour?

Your Arty Crafty Kids will naturally work through these questions as they progress through the art project, which in my opinion, is where the real creative magic happens.

Their artistic choices will be based on the findings of their creative experiments and with every mix, every stroke of the paintbrush, they will learn something new.

So if their colour-mixing results in a brownish looking mess, don’t stop the process. Instead, offer new palette (if desired) and see what happens…
