Halloween Printable Puppets: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscrafts

Step 1: Download and print the spooky templates on to white cardstock.

Colour in the puppet using a medium of your Arty Crafty Kids choice. In the example above, we’ve used a combination of Watercolour paint and felt tip pens.

Once your Arty Crafty Kids chosen character is complete and colourful, carefully cut the elements.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscrafts

Step 2: Locate the circles on the body, arms and legs, and create holes with a hole puncher.

Place the arms behind the body. Line up the holes and secure with a split pin.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscrafts

Step 3: Secure all the limbs with split pins and ensure they’re not secured too tightly or loosely – the arms and legs need to be able to move with ease.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscrafts

Step 4: Once you’re satisfied the arms and legs have a decent level of movement, thread a piece of cotton through the needle and tie a knot at the end.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscrafts

Step 5: Peirce the needle through the top of the leg as shown above and thread the cotton across to the other side.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscraftsStep 6: Finish off the join with a knot.

The cotton between the legs shouldn’t be too tight or too loose.  This may take a little trial and error, but you should be aiming for legs that can easily move, with tension still on the thread.

Arty Crafty Kids - Halloween Printable Puppets - A playful Halloween paper craft for Kids! #halloweencrafts #papercrafts #kidscraftsStep 7: Cut off another piece of thread and tie this to the centre of the strand joining the legs together.

Once pulled, the thread should make the legs kick out!

Step 2: To create a spooky ambience, this project explores and plays with twilight tones and hues; these include red, violet, blue, aqua green, yellow, orange and black.

Your Arty Crafty Kids can start from any point, however, I would recommend starting from the central circle with a warm colour and progressing to outer circles with cooler shades of blues and violet.

Step 3: Starting with a bright and solid yellow shade, add a small amount of red to yellow to create a lighter shade of orange.

Increase the mix of red to yellow to darken the orange.

Step 4: From orange, introduce a light pink shade and graduate to a solid dark red.

Throughout the project encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and engage in a process of trial and error to create their desired shades.

Discussion Points:

  • How do you make the colour lighter or darker?
  • How many shades of orange or red can you create?
  • Can you make the same colour twice?

Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

The artist Wassily Kandinsky is a favourite here at Arty Crafty Kids and today I have the pleasure of publishing the third instalment to our growing collection of Kandinsky Inspired Art Projects – ‘Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art’ .

Farbstudie Quadrate (squares with concentric circles) is one of Kandinsky’s most recognisable pieces and was created as a personal colour chart. Kandinsky believed you could express feelings through colours and shapes, and claimed to see lines and colours while listening to music. As such, he often painted to music; squares with concentric circles (and much of his work) is a reflection of that process.

To get your Arty Crafty Kids into the spirit of Kandinsky’s mindset, try playing music as they paint. Does this influence their painting or mood in any way?

Step1: Download our free Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Template and print on to white cardstock or mixed media paper (depends on your Arty Crafty Kids choice of medium).

Choose a medium!

Watercolours work well with this project and is our choice of medium for this tutorial.

Oil pastels, colouring pencils and acrylic paint are all good options and depending on the age group of your Arty Crafty Kids, they may prefer to challenge their mixing and blending skills (oil pastels) or keep it simple (colouring pencils).

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 2: Set an aim…

To create a spooky ambience, this project explores and plays with twilight tones and hues; these include red, violet, blue, aqua green, yellow, orange and black.

Alternatively, Arty Crafty Kids may prefer to explore Autumn colours or experimenting with contrasting and complementary colours. It’s entirely up to them and it’s important to allow the kids to guide the project.

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 3: Once your Arty Crafty Kids have an aim, let’s explore the colour palette!

If the aim is to create a spooky tree, ask them to think about the colours they associate with ‘Twilight’ or dusk and dawn.

Next, add colour. Using the circles as a guide, create a ring of one colour within the outline and then add a second ring and third with additional colours.

Continue until the circle is complete.

The colours can blend or remain solid and independent.

They can complement or contrast each other – the decision is your Arty Crafty Kids and there’s really no right or wrong

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 4: Once the circle is complete, fill in the remaining white space with one bold colour and then move onto the next.

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 5: Within each circle, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to explore different colour combinations.

How many different colour combinations can they make?

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

Step 6: Continue painting the circles within the grid until it’s full and bursting with colour!

Arty Crafty Kids - Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art - A fun Halloween twist on a popular art project #halloweenart #artforkids

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids have enjoyed creating their own Spooky Tree Kandinsky Inspired Circle Art.

Upon completion (and sometimes throughout the process – this will depend on your Arty Crafty Kids as it’s sometimes best not to disturb an artist in the zone!), it’s important to chat about the finished piece and the process.

Here are a few conversation starters and discussion points:

  • Tell me about your art.
  • How did you choose the colours?
  • How did you make that shade of …. ?
  • How would you describe the colours you have used?
  • What’s your favourite colour combination and why?

Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

This Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft has been designed with preschoolers and very young children in mind. The process of tearing, scrunching, rolling and sticking is wonderful for fine motor skills (or dexterity).

Fine motor skills refer to the coordination of small muscles within the hands, wrists and fingers that are essential for picking objects up and writing.

Crafts that involve a simple and repetitive process, such as our cute little pumpkin craft, give those fine motor skills a fabulous workout.

Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 1: Download the template from our members’ area or create your own.

Print the template on to good quality paper or white cardstock. Preschoolers are often generous with their glue application. Cardstock tends to be much better at absorbing the excess and prevents the craft turning into a soggy mess!

Begin tearing tissue paper and rolling/scrunching into balls.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 2: Coat a section of the template in a thin layer of PVA glue (liquid form or glue stick) and stick the balls of tissue paper within the pumpkin template.

The size of the tissue paper balls is wholly dependent on your preschooler. They may like teeny tiny balls or big open scrunchy ones – both options are perfect!

Notice from the picture the use of the pincer grip. Without even thinking about it, your infants and preschoolers will be strengthening their little muscles and improving their coordination throughout the craft.

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 3: Continue filling the pumpkin with tissue paper.

Encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to follow the lines of the pumpkin template and fill the white space by placing the tissue paper balls as closley together as possible.  This is great for hand-eye coordination!

Arty Crafty Kids - Tissue Paper Pumpkin Craft for kids. A sweet Autumn or Halloween craft that's great for developing fine motor skills! #pumpkin #preschool #preschoolcraft #easykidscraft #craftsforkids #finemotor

Step 4: Keep going until the pumpkin is completely full!

OPTIONS:

We love to give our Arty Crafty Kids choice and filling the pumpkin template with tissue paper is just one option!

Here are a few extra ideas:

  • For older children, take the magazine challenge! This involves using the paper from one magazine and filling the template with torn paper. This adds texture to the finished piece and Arty Crafty Kids use their creativity repurposing prints and images to create art. Example: Butterfly Collage
  • Sticking to a collage theme, perhaps paint the pumpkin template in its appropriate colours first and ask your Arty Crafty Kids to find matching coloured items (buttons, sequins, tissue paper etc) to fill the pumpkin.

These ideas can be applied to many of the templates on offer within the Arty Crafty Kids members area and can be downloaded as many times as you like!

Silhouette Halloween Art: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 1: Download your selected template and print.

We have six templates available, including a spider, witches hat, haunted house, bats, ghost and black cat.

These can be accessed within the Arty Crafty Kids online membership area or you can download a freebie via the sign-up form found towards the end of this post.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 2: Cut the chosen shape out.

The templates have been designed to encourage Arty Crafty Kids to practice their cutting skills. The smooth lines and simple shapes are perfect for little hands to navigate and their extra large shapes allow for mishaps.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

The spider template is a little trickier and would recommend allowing some additional white space around the legs (as shown above).

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 3: Cut out any extras.

Eyes for the ghost.

Windows and doors for the haunted house.

A buckle and holes to suggest stripes on the witches hat.

And any other extras your Arty Crafty Kids fancy adding.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 4. Place the silhouette onto a piece of black cardstock.

Apply white paint (ideally acrylic) to the sponge and begin gently dabbing the paint around the silhouette outline.

With each silhouette, start with white. This not only creates a bold and striking contrast against the black, but it also acts as a good base layer for other colours.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 5: Add a second colour.

As per the previous step, follow the outline of the silhouette and extend further into the black space.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 6: Continue to add additional colours.

Your Arty Crafty Kids may begin to notice that some colours will change as they layer and blend. This is a great opportunity to talk about colour mixing, inviting the kids to describe the changes they observe.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

Step 7: Once your Arty Crafty Kids are happy with their painting, gently peel the template away to reveal the silhouette.

Silhouette art is created by painting negative space. To explain this simply, negative space is the area that surrounds the subject or point of interest.

In this instance, our point of interest is the ghost and haunted house.

Arty Crafty Kids | Silhouette Halloween Art for Kids. Choose from a selection of Halloween Template to create brightly coloured works of art! #kidsart #kidscraft #halloweenartforkids #halloween #halloweencrafts

It’s a fun and abstract technique, that’s perfect for colour play.

With the ease of ready-mixed paint, it’s tempting to offer the full spectrum of ready-made colours, however, this denies kids the opportunity to experiment, play and ultimately learn through the process of trial and error.

For this reason, our Arty Crafty Boxes and many of our projects focus on primary colours, with the addition of white and black.

This is to encourage Arty Crafty Kids to explore and develop their colour mixing skills.

And it’s always fun to challenge them to make as many colours as possible, as well as asking simple questions throughout the process:

  • How much yellow and red do you need to make orange?
  • How many shades of blue can you make?
  • What happens when you mix all the colours together?

Halloween ABC Fingerprints

My kids love alphabet games and word play. We often pass the time on long car journeys with a power session of I Spy All things A (for example) and each person contributes a word until all the options are exhausted.  It’s a super fun game, that can get a little frantic! I have to admit, applying our game to create this Halloween ABC Fingerprints activity proved to be a challenge (and LOTS of fun).

And I hope you will agree – I think we nailed it! The only question mark I have is ‘C is for Coffin’, not because the word doesn’t fit, it’s more about the choice of colour we used to create our fingerprint coffin… Silver doesn’t work!

Aside from the coffin mishap, our Halloween ABC Fingerprints are really easy to recreate and are an engaging way to learn and practice the alphabet.

Our fingerprints were created by applying paint to our fingertips with a paintbrush and a sponge. We found that less is more, and the best prints were formed from a light and even coverage of the finger or thumb.

Easy Paper Witch Craft

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary. It can sweet and cute like our Easy Paper Witch Craft. I love her rosy cheeks, jeweled wart on the end of her nose and glittery black hat.

And this craft is all about using and being creative with the materials you have available at home. Perhaps you have some leftover wrapping/packing paper? buttons, yarn or random sequins that could benefit from some love.

Our witch is a mixed media project consisting of yarn, newspaper, stock card, patterned paper and glitter, and is perfectly open-ended enough for your children to create their own spin. If you don’t have yarn or fancy paper, perhaps the hair could be replaced with your Arty Crafty Kids handprint. The newspaper could be painted with watercolours or not, and maybe your kids would like to plat the hair of their witch?

With so many options, I wonder what direction your kids will take…
