Inspired by our ‘Cool Cat‘ and ‘Playful Pup’ concept, we’ve created a new versatile Paper Bunny Craft that’s perfectly suited to any upcoming Spring and Easter themed crafting that you might be planning for the kids.

Just like our other characters,  this Happy Hoppy Bunny knows how to strike a pose. With just one template, children can arrange the pieces to create a standing, sitting, crouching, bouncing or even a dancing bunny picture, which is great for imaginative and creative thinking.

Teachers have used this concept for story-telling, class displays and creative play with great success!

And on a practical level, it’s the perfect activity to support fine motor development; particularly scissor skills and tracing.

Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Today I’m showing you a classic Easter craft with a super cute added surprise. This paper plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise craft is easy and fun to make, and perfect for little hands to assemble themselves!

I adore the simplicity of the craft and it’s one those that i’m sure you’ve tried as a child yourself.

The Easter Egg offers a fabulously open-ended element where preschoolers can paint and stick till their hearts content, with an opportunity to practice their cutting skills.

And if you’re looking for an activity for a local toddler or preschool group, then the minimal set-up will be appealing.

Sound good?

Let’s get started!

To begin, shape the Paper Plate to resemble an oval ‘egg’ shape and then remove the top with some zig-zag cutting.

In reality, this might be a little challenging for children to do, but they will love having a go and whatever the outcome – it will be PERFECT!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Now for the best bit…

To decorate our Easter Egg we started out with painting some simple metallic stripes.

I love the glittery sheen of the metallic paint and it seems to have an ‘Easter’ feel to it, of course it’s not necessary for you to run out and buy metallic paint – I’m a huge advocate for simply using the materials you have available at home.

That said, i’m sure the kids will have their own ideas about how to paint their Easter Eggs!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Once the paint had dried, we added some pretty ribbon from scrap box.

Buttons, sequins, tissue paper, scrap paper etc would work just as well!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

To add the movable lid, secure the two parts with a split pin – this will allow the lid to move up and down to create a ‘hatching egg’.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

The chick couldn’t be easier to make and is simply a combination of paper and scrap felt, stuck together with a little PVA glue.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Using a piece of sticky tape, add the chick to the Easter Egg.

And that’s it, you should now have one super adorable Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise for the kids to play with.

If the kids enjoyed this paper plate craft, they may also love our Pop-Up Chick Craft and Pop-Up Bunny Craft, which uses similar materials.

Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny | A fun and easy Easter craft for kids!

This Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny is super fun and easy to make. Perfect for Easter crafting with the kids this Spring, who will just LOVE playing with their Easter Bunny creations!

It’s a great little craft to do during Spring where kids may begin to notice baby bunnies emerging from the fields. With grandparents who live in the country, my own kids love playing ‘spot the bunny’ in neighbouring fields and grass verges along the country roads.

With this in mind, the pop-up aspect of our Easter Craft is particularly apt.

Using materials you’re likely to already have stashed away in the craft cupboard, this couldn’t be easier to set up.

Sound good? let’s get started…

Supplies:

A Drinking Straw
Construction Paper
Craft Straw
Black Sharpie Pen
PVA Glue
Sticky Tape

Next, let’s read all bout it.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny | A fun and easy Easter craft for kids!

To begin, cut off the top third of the paper plate and then align the cut-off third with the bottom of the remaining paper plate.

You should have a nice gap between the paper plates.

Staple the two parts of the paper plate together, using the staples sparingly and cut out a zig-zagged jagged edge along the top of the paper plate to create the appearance of a broken egg.

For younger children, you may want to help out with the cutting and sticking, however kids of around preschool age will love to try this themselves.

And for the best bit, the kids can use their artistic license to decorate their eggs in the most spectacular and individual way.

They could use paint, tissue paper, colouring pens, stickers or anything else you have at home!

We chose to decorate our Easter egg with metallic paint, which leaves a gorgeous sparkly sheen.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny | A fun and easy Easter craft for kids!

While the Easter Egg is drying, let’s make the bunny!

Simply cut out a heart shape for the face and some bunny ears using contrasting coloured paper.

Assemble the paper together to make a ‘bunny face’ and add some craft straw for whiskers.

Complete the bunny with a pair of eyes and mouth, and affix to a drinking straw.

Add the bunny to the paper plate and start playing!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny | A fun and easy Easter craft for kids!

This craft puts me in the mind the of the popular nursery song “Sleeping Bunnies”

See the little bunnies sleeping till it’s nearly noon
Come and let us gently wake them with a merry tune
Oh how still, are they ill, wake up soon
Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop
Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop
Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop
Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop

And could be a really fun song to sing along with our Pop Up Paper Plate Bunny, especially if you’re trying this craft with a toddler or preschool group!

These Pop Up Paper Plate Chicks are super fun and easy to make. Perfect for a spot of Sping crafting with the kiddies, who will just LOVE playing with their creations.

It’s a particularly good craft to do during the build up to Easter, where the kids may notice that the warmer weather brings new life.

With birds busily building their nests and new chicks emerging, our craft offers kids an opportunity interpret their seasonal observations with creativity and play, which will have the kids chirping in no time!

And read all about the process…

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter Crafts for Kids | Pop Up Paper Plate Chicks

To get started, you will need a Paper Plate, a pair of scissors and a stapler.

Simply cut the Paper Plate in half and then place the two halves on top of each other. The curve of the Paper Plate will create a nice gap for the chick.

Secure the Paper Plates together with a stapler. I tend to use staples sparingly in all my kids crafts and for this craft you will only need a few!

Next, get the kids to mix a nice up a nice mucky brown colour and paint the paper plate.

Once the paper plate has dried, add a topping of craft straw and stick with PVA Glue.

Leave the nest to dry and let’s move onto the chick!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter Crafts for Kids | Pop Up Paper Plate Chicks

Our little chick is made out of paper and felt scraps.

If you don’t have any felt to hand, use the materials you have to make wings and some head tuff – of course the ‘tuff’ is an optional extra, I just think it’s rather cute!

Ask the kiddies to cut out all the shapes they think they will need to make a chick. This could produce some interesting results, but it’s always good for kids to take the lead.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter Crafts for Kids | Pop Up Paper Plate Chicks

Assemble the chick complete with wings, a beak and ‘tuffs’ using PVA Glue.

Finish off with a couple of dots for eyes.

Secure the chick to the paper straw with piece of tape and add the chick to the paper plate nest.

Next, it’s PLAY time!

My own children had a blast playing with their pop up chicks, creating all sorts of stories and singing ‘old Macdonald’ to their baby brother, who was left in hysterics with the exaggerated popping.

Glue Resist Watercolour Easter Egg

Arty Crafty Kids | Easter | Glue Resist & Watercolour Easter Egg | A colourful and fun Easter themed art projects for kids!

Resist art is a fun and easy technique for kids, and a great introduction into watercolours! Today I have the pleasure of showing you our glue resist & watercolour Easter Egg!

I love the way the glue adds another dimension to the painting, almost lifting the egg from the page.

Hot Glue is quickly becoming one of my favourite resist materials. We’ve previously used white crayon and oil pastels with fabulous results, however the kids love running their fingers along the lines of dry glue, offering a sensory element that my children seem to enjoy.

I find that the watercolour wash against the glue is lovely and clear with this material,  and my preschooler likes the simplicity of following the lines.

If you don’t have a hot glue gun to hand, do not let that deter you from this Easter craft as a ‘resist’ can be creating using pva glue from a squeezey bottle or a white crayon/oil pastel – sometimes it’s about working with the materials you have available!

Using a hot glue gun (or alternative resist material), create an outline of an Easter Egg onto the watercolour paper.

Arty Crafty Kids | Easter | Glue Resist & Watercolour Easter Egg | A colourful and fun Easter themed art projects for kids!

Begin filling in the Easter Egg with watercolours.

If your arty kid is new to watercolours, there are two techniques they could try..

Sweep a small amount of water directly onto the paper and then add the watercolour paint. This will create softer, blendable colours,

OR

For virbant, stronger colours, simply add the water to the brush, choose a colour and then begin painting without the water wash.

Maybe your arty kid could experiment with both techniques to see what they prefer.

Continue painting until the Egg is bursting with colour.
