Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations

These gorgeous Recycled Cardboard Heart decorations are easy to make and are entirely process-led. Arty Crafty Kids will have the best time exploring various painting techniques to create their hearts, adding depth and texture as they layer their base with prints and embellishments. It’s entirely open-ended and they can reuse materials found in the recycling bin or bottom of the craft supply box.

Consider using bottle tops, paper rolls, bubble wrap and sponges for printing.

As well as sequins and glitter for a little bling.

Get Creative!

This craft is about enabling your Arty Crafty Kids to freely explore their creativity by experimenting with the materials they have to hand.

The Loren variety the better and there really isn’t a right or wrong; it’s all about having fun.

These hearts are a child version of a collection of heart bookmarks we recently created for the fabulous Red Ted Art, where all three designs can be downloaded for FREE!

Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 1: Create the heart canvas’ by cutting out hearts shapes from a piece of cardboard.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 2: Hand over to your Arty Crafty Kids, supplying them with paint and materials to explore.

Once the children have painted a base layer of colour, perhaps they could experiement with stamping.

They could try shaping paper rolls into hearts and creating heart prints.

Splat painting can be controlled by brushing a blunt knife against the brush.

Bubble wrap is fabulous for prints.

And bottle tops are great for stamping!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 3: Perhaps add some washi tape?

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 4: Or even a little glitter.

To keep the glitter under control, we have a dedicated glitter tray and with a few boundaries in place, this helps to keep it contained and fun to use!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 5: Add tassels to the bottom of the hearts (this step is entirely optional and can also be substituted with pom-poms if desired).

Tassels are very easy to make.

Simply spread your fingers out and wrap some embroidery thread around your fingers.

Gently slip the hooped thread off your fingers and cut one end of the hoop to create a bunch.

Remove two threads from the bunch and tie one around the centre, leaving two loose ends.

Fold the bunch over at the point of the knot and tie the second piece of thread around the bunch, wrapping it around several times as shown above and secure with a knot.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 6: Fasten the tassel to the bottom of the heart, piercing a hole with a hole punch or round head pliers.

Before securing the tassel to the heart, add a few decorative beads to the thread.

To transform the hearts into decorations, they could be hung individually on the wall using string or thread together to create a unique heart garland.

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations.

Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 1. Take a single paper plate and cut it in half.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 2. Using one-half and back of the paper plate, divide it into a body and head area, painting the respective areas brown and pink

The Arty Crafty Kids may need to do some colour mixing to achieve the desired shared either using white to lighten or/and mixing primary colours to create a brown.

Of course, the colours can also come straight from a bottle, but colour mixing is always fun!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 3. Cut an A4 sheet of construction paper into strips and then cut along the paper in a zig-zag formation to create triangles.

As you can see, we decided to use two different colours to create a spiky pattern.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 4. Working with the curves and grooves of the paper plate, begin sticking the construction paper onto the paper plate.

If you have used different shades, this is a great opportunity for Arty Crafty Kids to create basic patterns with their triangles.

Step 5. Once the Arty Crafty Kids have reached the flat area of the paper plate, simply fold the bottoms of the triangles and glue this area directly onto the paper plate to create a ‘spiky’ lift.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 6. Once the body is full of gorgeous spikes, add a googly eye, a cute black nose and a little smile!

And the Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft is complete!

Arty Crafty Kid | Craft | Over the Rainbow Paper Plate Unicorn Puppets | Using the free Unicorn download, cut and colour to create playful puppets, who love to jump, slide and dance over the cute paper plate rainbow! A fun interactive craft and play craft idea for kids!

  1. Print, colour and cut out the free Unicorn download and attach to a blunt chop stick or stick using masking tape. Masking tape is a great material for kids to use as it can be easily torn without the use of scissors. It’s particularly good for junk modelling!

2. Divide the paper plate into an arched rainbow and blue sky.

3. Use washable acrylic paints for the rainbow and apply the metallic blue paint with a sponge. I think it’s always a good idea to use a foam brush for large areas of paper plates. It prevents the paper plate from getting too soggy and provides an even coverage.

Mixed Media Paper Unicorn Craft

Who doesn’t love unicorns? the world seems to have gone Unicorn crazy with a number of bizarre and colourful trends sweeping the internet; Unicorn hair, unicorn cakes, unicorn poop (what’s that about!?!) and after receiving a number of requests for an easy “do-able” Unicorn craft for kids, I thought it was about time to feature one here on Arty Crafty Kids, so we’ve come up with this adorable (and super easy) Mixed Media Paper Unicorn Craft.

Mixed Media is an amazing art concept for kids. It’s all about exploring and combining different processes, materials and textures. It offers a tactile experience for children and if you’re keen to try something new with the kids, then our unicorn could be a fun introduction into mixed media. It’s also a great way to re-purpose materials from the recycling bin or make use of random crafty bits and bobs that accumulate over time.

8. Complete the unicorn by adding facial features (big googly eye, cute smile and a small nostil ) and I’m sure you will agree – a unicorn is not a unicorn without a little sparkle!

9. (Optional – as I know glitter is not for everyone) Add some glitter!
