Autumn Handprint Tree

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Autumn is a gorgeous, colourful season that never fails to get the creative juices flowing and if you’re looking for an opportunity to explore simple colour-mixing techniques within a seasonal theme, then this Autumn Handprint Tree art project is the one for you.

Children can observe the natural change that comes with Autumn and attempt to recreate what they see within their art.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Ask questions:

  • How much Red and Yellow do you need to make Orange?
  • How do you make different tones of Orange (Yellow, Red, Green)?
  • How do you make Brown?

This simple process of trial and error is a fabulous learning exercise, with an emphasis on problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking (mixing and mentally measuring colours to achieve the desired tone).

And of course, it’s wonderful for creativity!

Autumn Handprint Tree Art:  Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 1. Using a pencil, draw a faint line around the hand and arm of your child.

If your child is of preschool age or older, they may want to have a go themselves.

Next, paint the print brown.

Alternatively, simply draw around the arm directly onto a piece of brown paper and cut out the shape and stick.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 2. Time for the really fun bit – colour mixing!

This is s chance for kiddos to explore colour by experimenting with primary colours to create Autumn shades of red, yellow, orange and green, oh and of course brown (every toddler can make brown!).

Using a q-tip, end of a pencil or even your child’s finger, begin adding dots around the tree.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 3. Build the dots with different colours. Try overlapping the dots and see the print transform into an Autumn Handprint Tree!

Since writing this post in 2015, I have seen hundreds of Autumn Handprint Trees completed by children from all over the world and it’s established itself as a favourite tree art project with teachers!

Thank you for all the amazing feedback. Every photo brings a smile to my face!

Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids

“Never, even as a child, would I bend to a rule” – Claude Monet

Our Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids is open to breaking the rules. Using a piece of card and spoon for colour mixing, children can recreate their own impressionist water lily painting. And while our tool of choice is the spoon, children can explore and experiment with their hands, brushes, a sponge, scrap card or anything else they fancy trying to add texture and movement to the pond.

A spoon could be considered an unusual tool for exploring the works of famous artists. However, as you will soon find out, it blends the colours beautifully and smooths the paint as it spreads across the cardboard canvas, creating a ‘reflective’ surface that was key to Monet’s exploration of capturing patterns of changing light. The spoon can create swirls and movement, that naturally flows, almost like water.

Although a simple twist, it’s one that lends itself to adaption and can be easily applied within the home or classroom.

So let’s gather some old cardboard, paint, and a spoon, and get started!

Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkids

Step 1: Using a piece of cardboard, cut it into a pond like shape and add sporadically add blobs of blue, yellow and white paint across the surface.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkids

Step 2: Spread the spoon across the surface, capturing the paint and blending, while spreading to across the surface.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkids

Step 3: Swirl and move the paint across until the cardboard is completely covered.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkids

Step 4: To add texture to smooth surface, try tearing the top layer of the cardboard to reveal the corrugated card to create prints across the ‘pond’.

My daughter suggested that these could be ripples created by bugs that often hover across the water, or perhaps a frog that’s just leaped in.

Either way, encourage the Arty Crafty Kids to spend time working on their pond surface, blending colours and if necessary, adding more paint.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkidsStep 5: Using green stock card, add some lily pads to the pond.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art for Kids | Claude Monet Water Lilies Art Project for Kids #famousartists #kidsart #artforkids #monetforkids

Step 6: And finishing off with tissue paper lilies!

To make the lilies, cut out a pair of circles using two different colours for contrast (or the same) and place a button into the centre, securing with PVA glue.

Then simply scrunch the paper around the button to create a 3D effect.

And the Claude Monet Water Lily Art Project for Kids is now complete!

Rainbows are a huge source of inspiration within my household, so I wasn’t surprised that her card idea was Rainbow themed. However, I was unprepared for why she wanted to create this card for her Daddy’s Birthday:

” My Daddy is like a Rainbow. He’s happy, funny, very silly and sometimes can be cross, and I love everything about him. He’s just like the song from Trolls [ True Colours] and he’s never scared to be himself”

Heartwarming stuff right?

Step 2: Hand over to your Arty Crafty Kids, supplying them with paint and materials to explore.

Once the children have painted a base layer of colour, perhaps they could experiement with stamping.

They could try shaping paper rolls into hearts and creating heart prints.

Splat painting can be controlled by brushing a blunt knife against the brush.

Bubble wrap is fabulous for prints.

And bottle tops are great for stamping!

Step 3: Perhaps add some washi tape?

Step 4: Or even a little glitter.

To keep the glitter under control, we have a dedicated glitter tray and with a few boundaries in place, this helps to keep it contained and fun to use!

Step 5: Add tassels to the bottom of the hearts (this step is entirely optional and can also be substituted with pom-poms if desired).

Tassels are very easy to make.

Simply spread your fingers out and wrap some embroidery thread around your fingers.

Gently slip the hooped thread off your fingers and cut one end of the hoop to create a bunch.

Remove two threads from the bunch and tie one around the centre, leaving two loose ends.

Fold the bunch over at the point of the knot and tie the second piece of thread around the bunch, wrapping it around several times as shown above and secure with a knot.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 6: Fasten the tassel to the bottom of the heart, piercing a hole with a hole punch or round head pliers.

Before securing the tassel to the heart, add a few decorative beads to the thread.

To transform the hearts into decorations, they could be hung individually on the wall using string or thread together to create a unique heart garland.

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations.

Step 1: Download the template.

Using red cardstock, draw around your Arty Crafty Kids Hands and cut the prints out.

Older children will enjoy tracing around their own hands and having the opportunity to practice their cutting skills.

Step 2: Add spots with fingerprinting.

There are few ways for this to be approached. Your Arty Crafty Kids could use their prints to create heart-shaped spots, as well as dots. They could draw the spots on with a black pen or replace the paint with embellishments.

Step 3: Cut out the shapes from the template and use them to create a black (using cardstock) ladybug body and antennae.

Step 4: Glue the white ‘from your little love bug’ circle onto the body and stick a picture of your love bug within the empty space.

Step 5: Position the prints.

If you would like the wings to form a ‘heart’ shape, the prints will need to be positioned as shown above.

Once you’re happy with where they’re placed, push a split pin through the top of the handprint and again through the black card.

Step 6: Add the second wing as above, ensuring the prints have plenty of movement to open and close. Open the split pins to secure.
