Learn how to make an adorable hedgehog card with a pop up heart with the kids – the perfect craft for celebrating Valentine’s Day. 

And while we have designed this card with Valentine’s Day in mind, it’s also a lovely card making craft for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and birthday celebrations. 

The craft tutorial will teach children how to make a very simple pop up heart – a lovely introduction into creating 3D effects with paper! 

Children will also engage their imaginations and creativity to make the owl their own, with opportunities to decorate the owl and background.

How to Make a Hedgehog Card with a Pop Up Heart: 

Materials 

• Card Stock (Backing, the Heart and Printing) 
• Brown and Skin Toned Paper
• Colored Marker Pens 
• A Fine Tipped Black Pen
• A Favorite Coloring Medium
• Glue Stick 
• Scissors 
• Pencil

Let’s Make a Cute Card for Valentine’s Day!

Cut out the Hedgehog Card Insert and Draw a Design

Begin by cutting out all the hedgehog template elements and the card insert.

Using a pencil or a fine tipped black pen, draw a cute design – our example features stems with flower hearts.

Fold the Backing Card and Insert, and Affix

Once the design is complete, affix the insert to the inside of the backing card.

Trace the Hedgehog Elements onto Paper

Trace the hedgehog onto colored paper – browns and skin tones.

TIP: Do not trace the inside of the spiky hedgehog element. Simply draw a line across the empty space reserved for feet – this will make it much easier for Arty Crafty Kids to cut out.

Carefully Cut out the Traced Hedgehog Shapes

Cut out all the traced hedgehog shapes.

Assemble the Hedgehog’s Body and Decorate with Spikes

Glue the pale body with feet to the spiky hedgehog body.

Next, use a white or black pen and draw lots of scattered lines to suggest spikes.

Glue the Hedgehog’s Eyes and Nose

Glue the eyes and nose, and use a black pen to add a smile.

Glue the Hedgehog to the Inside of the Card

Fold the hedgehog in half. 

Align the folds of the hedgehog and insert, and secure with glue.

Fold the Pop Up Heart and Affix the Arms

Fold the heart in half and glue an arm to each side of the heart.

Fold the Arms Inside the Heart

Next, fold the arms to the inside of the heart.

Secure the Pop Up Heart the Hedgehog

The Hedgehog Pop Up Card for Valentine’s Day is Complete!

Gently fold the card to enhance the pop up feature.
