Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations

These gorgeous Recycled Cardboard Heart decorations are easy to make and are entirely process-led. Arty Crafty Kids will have the best time exploring various painting techniques to create their hearts, adding depth and texture as they layer their base with prints and embellishments. It’s entirely open-ended and they can reuse materials found in the recycling bin or bottom of the craft supply box.

Consider using bottle tops, paper rolls, bubble wrap and sponges for printing.

As well as sequins and glitter for a little bling.

Get Creative!

This craft is about enabling your Arty Crafty Kids to freely explore their creativity by experimenting with the materials they have to hand.

The Loren variety the better and there really isn’t a right or wrong; it’s all about having fun.

And while your children are busily creating their hearts, why not indulge in some crafting for yourself?

These hearts are a child version of a collection of heart bookmarks we recently created for the fabulous Red Ted Art, where all three designs can be downloaded for FREE!

Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 1: Create the heart canvas’ by cutting out hearts shapes from a piece of cardboard.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 2: Hand over to your Arty Crafty Kids, supplying them with paint and materials to explore.

Once the children have painted a base layer of colour, perhaps they could experiement with stamping.

They could try shaping paper rolls into hearts and creating heart prints.

Splat painting can be controlled by brushing a blunt knife against the brush.

Bubble wrap is fabulous for prints.

And bottle tops are great for stamping!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 3: Perhaps add some washi tape?

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 4: Or even a little glitter.

To keep the glitter under control, we have a dedicated glitter tray and with a few boundaries in place, this helps to keep it contained and fun to use!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 5: Add tassels to the bottom of the hearts (this step is entirely optional and can also be substituted with pom-poms if desired).

Tassels are very easy to make.

Simply spread your fingers out and wrap some embroidery thread around your fingers.

Gently slip the hooped thread off your fingers and cut one end of the hoop to create a bunch.

Remove two threads from the bunch and tie one around the centre, leaving two loose ends.

Fold the bunch over at the point of the knot and tie the second piece of thread around the bunch, wrapping it around several times as shown above and secure with a knot.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 6: Fasten the tassel to the bottom of the heart, piercing a hole with a hole punch or round head pliers.

Before securing the tassel to the heart, add a few decorative beads to the thread.

To transform the hearts into decorations, they could be hung individually on the wall using string or thread together to create a unique heart garland.

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations.

Messy Heart Painting

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Messy Heart Painting | An amazing hands-on sensory art session for kids to explore texture and colour mixing. Super fun and easy art ideafor kids, with a set-up tine of less than 5 minutes!

To create the heart canvas, simply grab an old cardboard box and cut out a heart shape.

Next, wrap it with tinfoil.

Depending on how perfectionist you are, you could either smooth it out or leave a few bumps and creases for a little extra sensory fun.

Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

Today we’ve swapped our white crayons and oil pastels with a hot glue gun to create this amazing Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting.

I simply adore how the painting turned out, with the designs appearing lifted from the page.

It’s a process that can be enjoyed by an incredibly broad age group, from toddlers to teenagers (and I’m sure a few adults would a welcome play too!).

Resist art never fails to engage my own kids. There’s an element of intrigue – What will the paintings reveal? – to a calm and considered approach as they fill in, cover and bring their designs to life.

And while we’ve used a hot glue gun to create a type of 3D effect, ordinary PVA glue from a squeezy bottle would also work or failing that, simply use a white crayon as a ‘resist’ medium.

Whatever resources you have at home, this a do-able and easy art project to recreate at home or within the classroom.

DIRECTIONS: Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

Using a soft pencil, gently draw a design onto the white card.

Be creative – draw hearts, flowers, stars, sun and moon or create a cool underwater scene.

Using a hot glue gun, follow the drawn lines and dispense glue.

If you do not have a hot glue gun, you could buy one here or simply substitute it for PVA glue from a squeezy bottle – just be aware that PVA glue takes longer to dry and may overflow.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

The glue from a hot glue gun should take minutes to dry!

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

Next, add the watercolour paint by mixing water first and then colour.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Watercolour and Glue Resist Heart Painting

As you can see from the concentration of my little ones face, she was totally absorbed in this process and took great care to colour in each individual heart.

Handprint Valentine Heart Tree

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Valentine Heart Tree

With the season of love approaching, we’ve certainly poured a lot of love into this Handprint Valentine Heart Tree.

I adore how it turned out!

And for my ambidextrous daughter, who finds scissors rather tricky to use, it’s been a fabulous craft for practicing her cutting skills.

She also adores hearts and mushy sentiments, and added our names to each of the branches of the handprint tree – adorable!

Sadly, my kiddies names are a no-go on Arty Crafty Kids, but I’m sure you can picture how cute this would look.

To set up this easy and fun valentines craft at home, here’s what you need….

MATERIALS: Handprint Valentine Heart Tree

This post contains affiliates

A sheet of white card
Acrylic Kid-Friendly Paint
Watercolours
An old book or Newspaper
Pencil
Glue Stick
Scissors

DIRECTIONS: Handprint Valentine Heart Tree

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

Depending on the age of your child, either trace around your child’s’ arm or ask them to have a go for themselves.

Next, paint the arm brown.

This is a great opportunity for a little colour mixing!

Offer your kids red, yellow and blue paint and see how long it takes to make brown – in my experience, kids rarely have a problem mixing brown!

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

While the handprint tree is drying, tear out some printed pages from an old book or use a newspaper.

Using watercolours, paint the printed sheets.

To avoid an excess of soggy paper, saturate the paintbrush with water before mixing the paint and then quickly glide the brush over the paper in one continuous stroke.

My 6-year-old found this process incredibly calming and happily spent her afternoon painting sheet after sheet.

TIP: Once the printed page is covered with watercolour paint, gently stretch and smooth it out to eliminate any creases or bumps that may form while drying.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

Cut the watercolour printed sheets into thick strips, fold in half and cut out one-half of a heart shape along the fold.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

Open it up and ta-da, your kids will have a symmetrical heart!

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

Cut out more hearts of varying sizes and shapes.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Valentines - Handprint Heart Valentine Tree

Glue the hearts between the fingers of the tree and add more hearts to create the appearance of a tree.

Either mix up the varying hearts or suggest to the kiddies to arrange the hearts in a  large to small order – a great opportunity for younger kids to assess differences in size.

TIP: To create a 3D heart effect, apply the glue to the centre of the heart and allow the edges to naturally fold away from the paper.
