Autumn Leaf Painting

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

This gorgeous Autumn Leaf Painting project is an exploration of basic colour-mixing principles, with the aim to recreate the Autumn hues and shades as observed by Arty Crafty Kids.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Ask questions:

  • How much Red and Yellow do you need to make Orange?
  • How do you make different tones of Orange (Yellow, Red, Green)?
  • How do you make Brown?
  • Can you make the same colour twice?

Kids will naturally adopt a process of trial and error to create their desired colours, and this simple process has many positive learning outcomes:

  • Mathematical Thinking  – Arty Crafty Kids will be mentally measuring and testing paint ratios to create new colours
  • Problem Solving – The process of working out ‘HOW’ to create a new colour and replicate the shades of the leaves they’ve collected is problem-solving in action.
  • Language – Simply talking about their processes and finding appropriate words to describe their new colours helps develop vocabulary.

And all of these outcomes combined stimulate and enhance children’s imaginations and creativity!

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

Step 1. Head outside and gather as many leaves as possible.

Variety is key here, so have a good rummage and find different shapes, sizes and colours!

Once your Arty Crafty Kids have a bag or two filled with leaves, start painting!

Using three separate plates, place one of the primary colours on each (Red, Yellow & Blue).  This will allow plenty of room for colour-mixing and painting!

For reference, take a look at our basic colour-mixing chart:

https://www.artycraftykids.com/product/arty-crafty-kids-club/

And begin mixing colours.

Sponge painting around the leaves may take a little practice, especially for smaller hands, but there’s no rush and the process is all about playing and exploring.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

Step 2. Moving on from the play to create a complete piece of leaf art is very easy to do.

Position a number of leaves of different sizes and shapes on top of the canvas.

One by one, begin sponge painting around each leaf, adding different colours and tones as you work around the leaf.

Once complete, gently peel the leaf away to reveal the silhouette.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

Step 3. Repeat the above process until the canvas is full of leafy silhouettes.

Once complete, begin filling in the remaining negative space with more Autumn colours, layering the paint to create additional depth and texture.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

Step 4.  Next, add a leaf print within some of the silhouettes.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

This is a really fun way to play with negative and positive space. In art terms, negative space is the surrounding area of a point of interest. In this instance, our leaves.

The notion of positive and negative space is naturally explored in this project and one your Arty Crafty Kids will consider without knowing the official terminology or theory – they’ll be too busy doing!

Craft Stick Canvas Art

The clue is in the name, but craft sticks are not often associated with ‘process art’ and subsequently, this months craft stick theme for the monthly process art challenge left me scratching my head.

I simply had no idea how to incorporate them into art.

Luckily my kids had their own ideas and this served as a timely reminder that ‘process art’ is not about the end result and it’s not up to me to ‘decide what to do with them’.

With the tools to hand, the kids created something unique and spectacular.

To quote my 3 y/o Miss Cakes, her craft stick canvas art is “the most beautiful picture in the entire world”.

Lucky for you, the magic has been captured into one neat little video – take a look and sign up to our YouTube Channel for more Arty Crafty fun.

Enjoy!

Using lots of PVA glue, cover the one side of the craft stick and attach it onto the canvas.

Whether your child glues the craft stick directly onto the canvas or decides to layer the sticks on top of each other, the PVA should be strong enough to secure the craft sticks – the canvas will need plenty of time to dry.

This process is a fantastic way for kids to explore texture and shape.

Layering the sticks adds an interesting dimension and as your children create; they will be figuring out the best way to balance the sticks, secure them effectively, as well as continuously assessing the available space through play to find the best fit – all of this in the name of art!

Bubble Wrap Spring Blossom Tree

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Spring Crafts for Kids | Bubble Wrap Spring Blossom Tree

Bubble wrap is one of our favourite materials to craft with. It’s fun, dynamic (it’s also very cheap to buy or can be recycled from packaging), and combined with paint, the prints are fabulous! As you can see from our Bubble Wrap Spring Blossom Tree – it’s perfect for creating tree leaves and blossom!

Seasonal change is often a hot topic in my home. My kids are simply fascinated by the changing appearance of trees; so it’s not surprising that many of our art projects are inspired by trees as this is a great way to learn and interpret seasonal changes.

To recreate our Bubble Wrap Spring Blossom Tree at home, all you need is a few basic materials…

Easy Butterfly Kids Art

This easy butterfly kids art project is one of those that happened off the cuff, on a dark rainy afternoon. We had the paints out and my preschooler poured herself some paint and began spreading it with her hands.

This took me straight back to my own childhood to one my earliest arty memories.

I recall being transfixed by the way  the colours mixed and the unique patterns the process left behind.

And here, with this simple butterfly twist on a classic art concept, my own preschooler couldn’t get enough.

She made butterfly after butterfly; equally amazed by the colours.

Art for kids doesn’t need to be complicated and sometimes all it takes is some paper, paint and a pair of hands.

Using a single sheet of A4 paper, fold, cut to shape and reopen.

Place splodges ofPaint along the crease of the paper.

Use a good mixture of bright and contrasting colours, using enough Paint to enable it to be spread.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Butterfly Kids Art

Fold and spread the paint with a pair of hands.

Encourage your arty kids to spread the paint away from the centre, all the way to the tips of the butterfly wings.

Spread the Paint using a mixture of fingers and palms.

My arty preschooler loved the sensory element of smoothing out the lumps and bumps, and struggled to resist the urge of opening the butterfly prematurely.

Open the butterfly, leave to dry and start the next one…

Can you imagine an entire wall display made up of these cheerful butterflies?

Easy Paper Plate Rainbow Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easy Paper Plate Rainbow Craft | A simple paper plate rainbow craft for kids. A super cute St Patrick's Day Craft or Spring Craft.

As an adult, I still get excited when a rainbow appears in the sky and my children, literally, shriek with delight. We love rainbows and if you haven’t already guessed, they’re a huge source of inspiration here at Arty Crafty Kids.

Today I have the pleasure of showing you an incredibly easy paper plate rainbow craft that’s perfect for your toddler or preschooler.

Isn’t it sweet?

And while it’s a simple craft, it also presents a fantastic opportunity to introduce colour mixing to young children (Red/Yellow = Orange, Yellow/Blue = Green. Blue/Red = Purple).

There’s also an element of fine motor work, as the children have carefully glide their paintbrushes across the paper plate to create individual arches of a reasonbly equal size  – although in reality, lets not worry about the details as kids  are likely to have their own wonderful ideas of how their rainbows will look ( i’m sure there will even be a brown one here or there).

Sound good?

Paper Plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft

Arty Crafty Kids - Christmas - Paper Plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft

“Rudolph the red nose reindeer, had a very shiny nose” or a very fluffy nose, like our paper plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft.

I adore the simplicity of this festive craft and it’s one that children will be able to make and assemble themselves.

Using just a few materials that you’re likely to already have stashed away in the craft cupboard, it could be set up very easily.

But first, you will need to pop outside and collect some antler twigs!

My kids thought I was crazy when I suggested that we go on an antler hunt…

Luckily they embraced the idea and had a blast rummaging through the leaves in pursuit of the perfect antler twig!

Arty Crafty Kids - Christmas - Paper Plate Rudolph

First paint the Paper Plate brown with either brown paint or encourage the kids to do some colour-mixing to make brown – in my experience, kids rarely have trouble making brown!

TIP: To ensure the paper plate doesn’t get too soggy and dries quickly, try sponge painting!

Cut the Paper Plate to shape and cut out two ears with the off-cuts.

Attach the ears and twigs using some tape.

TIP: Masking tape is a great alternative to sellotape as kids are able to easily tear or cut pieces off for themselves. It’s particularly handy for kids who enjoy junk modeling

Finish off with some googly eyes and a big red nose!
