Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 1: Create the heart canvas’ by cutting out hearts shapes from a piece of cardboard.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 2: Hand over to your Arty Crafty Kids, supplying them with paint and materials to explore.

Once the children have painted a base layer of colour, perhaps they could experiement with stamping.

They could try shaping paper rolls into hearts and creating heart prints.

Splat painting can be controlled by brushing a blunt knife against the brush.

Bubble wrap is fabulous for prints.

And bottle tops are great for stamping!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 3: Perhaps add some washi tape?

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 4: Or even a little glitter.

To keep the glitter under control, we have a dedicated glitter tray and with a few boundaries in place, this helps to keep it contained and fun to use!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 5: Add tassels to the bottom of the hearts (this step is entirely optional and can also be substituted with pom-poms if desired).

Tassels are very easy to make.

Simply spread your fingers out and wrap some embroidery thread around your fingers.

Gently slip the hooped thread off your fingers and cut one end of the hoop to create a bunch.

Remove two threads from the bunch and tie one around the centre, leaving two loose ends.

Fold the bunch over at the point of the knot and tie the second piece of thread around the bunch, wrapping it around several times as shown above and secure with a knot.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 6: Fasten the tassel to the bottom of the heart, piercing a hole with a hole punch or round head pliers.

Before securing the tassel to the heart, add a few decorative beads to the thread.

To transform the hearts into decorations, they could be hung individually on the wall using string or thread together to create a unique heart garland.

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations.

Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Today I have the sweetest, most adorable Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft you will ever see! it even comes with spikes that can be stroked and arranged to form pretty patterns.

Little hands will be kept busy with all the sticking, gluing, cutting and painting involved, working on their fine motor skills while having fun – making this a great woodland themed animal craft within a preschool and early years setting.

This little cutey was inspired by my friend Andreja’s (the creative force behind the gorgeous kids’ craft site Easy Peasy and Fun)  Paper Plate Hedgehog, which comes with an Autumnal (and very clever) leafy twist.

Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft: Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 1. Take a single paper plate and cut it in half.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 2. Using one-half and back of the paper plate, divide it into a body and head area, painting the respective areas brown and pink

The Arty Crafty Kids may need to do some colour mixing to achieve the desired shared either using white to lighten or/and mixing primary colours to create a brown.

Of course, the colours can also come straight from a bottle, but colour mixing is always fun!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 3. Cut an A4 sheet of construction paper into strips and then cut along the paper in a zig-zag formation to create triangles.

As you can see, we decided to use two different colours to create a spiky pattern.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 4. Working with the curves and grooves of the paper plate, begin sticking the construction paper onto the paper plate.

If you have used different shades, this is a great opportunity for Arty Crafty Kids to create basic patterns with their triangles.

Step 5. Once the Arty Crafty Kids have reached the flat area of the paper plate, simply fold the bottoms of the triangles and glue this area directly onto the paper plate to create a ‘spiky’ lift.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft | Super cute Hedgehog craft for kids. Perfect for Autumn crafting and woodland animal topic at preschool. #animalcraft #kidscraft

Step 6. Once the body is full of gorgeous spikes, add a googly eye, a cute black nose and a little smile!

And the Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft is complete!

Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft

Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft

Leaves are beginning to fall, which means only one thing…Autumn is on its way! Autumn is the season of colour and it’s by far my favourite season. Who doesn’t love scrunching through leaves, the crisp air and the blanket of beautiful colour that sweeps the sky line. Today’s Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft has been created with young children and preschoolers in mind. The bubble wrap adds a tactile textured element to craft and the handy printable allows children to dive straight in – perfect for short attention spans!

Children can observe the natural change that comes with Autumn and attempt to recreate what they see within their art.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Ask questions:

  • How much Red and Yellow do you need to make Orange?
  • How do you make different tones of Orange (Yellow, Red, Green)?
  • How do you make Brown?

This simple process of trial and error is a fabulous learning exercise, with an emphasis on problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking (mixing and mentally measuring colours to achieve the desired tone).

And of course, it’s wonderful for creativity!

Step 1. Print the free Tree Template (complete the sign-up form to be referred) onto a piece of white card stock. I prefer to use card stock for kids art projects for one simple reason – it’s durable and doesn’t turn into a soggy mess when the kids (inevitably) use an excess of paint!

Step 2. Mix the Autumn colours using the primary colours. This is a great way for children to explore colour shades beyond the secondary colours.

Apply the paint directly to the bubbles – this will create clear and crisp circular prints!

For your reference, refer to our basic colour-mixing chart:

Step 3. Turn the bubble wrap over and press down firmly.

Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft | A super cute sunflower handprint craft for kids!

Sunflowers in full bloom is a glorious sight. There’s a certain amount of excitement that surrounds the moment a sunflower first begins to sprout; marking the beginnings of a very tall journey till the moment the flower proudly shines. Every year my kids enjoy the wonder of a new sunflower and todays Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft is a fitting tribute to what’s become a seasonal tradition.

This is a wonderful craft for children big and small, and today’s example has been put together by my 7 year-old. I love the addition of jewels on the fingertips. To recreate this craft at home, all you need is a few basic materials and a pair of willing hands.

Shall we begin?

Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft: materials and tutorial

Stock Card
Yellow/Orange and Green Paint
A Small Round Object
Black Buttons
Pencil
Sponge
Paintbrush
Scissors
PVA Glue
Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft | A super cute sunflower handprint craft for kids!

To begin, draw around a small round object positioned in the centre of the card. This is to serve as a guidance for positioning the handprints and will become the textured centre of the sunflower.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft | A super cute sunflower handprint craft for kids!

Cover the hand in paint using a brush or sponge. I often find that the coverage is better when applied with a sponge, but work with the materials you have available.

Work around the circumference of the circle with multiple prints. We found that 4 prints work well, as it’s nice to keep the prints clear and defined. However, my 7 year-old eventually felt that her sunflower needed more, so it’s down to your child’s creative preferences.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft | A super cute sunflower handprint craft for kids!

Add a thick layer of PVA glue to the centre of the sunflower and fill with black buttons. If you do not have buttons, use black tissue paper instead. Alternatively, you could use real sunflower seeds!

Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft

Finish off with a green stem and leaves.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Easy Handprint Sunflower Craft | A super cute sunflower handprint craft for kids!

If you are trying this craft with younger children, I would recommend creating the prints on a separate piece of card – if one or two of the prints don’t work out, they can always be repeated. Once they’re dry, cut out the prints and stick onto the card, again following the circumference of the circle.

Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art | A fun interpretation of Kandinsky's famous conecentric circles. A great way for kids to learn about famous artists and create their own colourful nature art with rocks.

Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles is perhaps his most recognisable work and is commonly used by teachers as an introduction into the topic ‘famous artists’. You might be surprised to learn that this piece was never a fully-fledged painting and was used by Kandinsky as a type of colour chart for his work. As we all know, children certainly know how to mix colours (especially when it comes to brown tones) and this simple Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art project is a fun way for children to explore colour combinations, with an opportunity to use natural materials as their canvas.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art | A fun interpretation of Kandinsky's famous conecentric circles. A great way for kids to learn about famous artists and create their own colouful nature art with rocks.

As well as creating a piece of abstract art inspired by a famous artist, these rocks present endless creative play possibilities. Kids can use them as colour charts; to create patterns and mandala art; they could be offered as gifts to friends and family or simply left on the beach as a gift to a stranger.

Smooth round rocks
Acrylic Paint

To begin, arm the kids with their buckets and take a trip to a nearby beach (or anywhere else that may have rocks) and collect as many smooth round rocks as your kids can carry.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art | A fun interpretation of Kandinsky's famous conecentric circles. A great way for kids to learn about famous artists and create their own colourful nature art with rocks.

Next, thoroughly wash the rocks and leave them to dry.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art | Kandinsky Inspired Rock Art | A fun interpretation of Kandinsky's famous conecentric circles. A great way for kids to learn about famous artists and create their own colourful nature art with rocks.

Cover the surface with a base layer of white acrylic paint and leave it dry.

Once the base layer has dried, add the circles.

“Everything starts with a dot” – Wassily Kandinsky

Start with a large dot in the middle and then add multiple surrounding circles, encouraging the kids to use the full colour palette.

Once the rocks have dried, add a light layer of varnish over each. This will preserve the paint and add a gorgeous glean.

Next it’s play time!

Easy CD Snail Craft

Easy CD Snail Craft

This easy peasy CD Snail Craft is the brain child of my 7 year old little lovely. I adore how she utilised the craft materials to create unique and funky shells for her snails!

While on the surface this is a simple kids craft, there’s an amazing amount of fine motor work happening with painting, sticking, threading and weaving. Kids get to enjoy the creative freedom of decorating their CD’s and can simply play with their designs.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easy CD Snail Craft | A super fun and funky snail craft for kids!

As you can see, my daughter transformed CD’s into looms for weaving as well simply dipping the yarn into glue to create a spiral. And with each creation, she has beautifully demonstrated this crafts versatility – can you imagine how wonderful a complete display of CD Snails would look within a class environment?

And since we’re living in a digital age, I’m you’ll have a few redundant CD’S/DVD’s stashed away, so shall we get crafting?
