Easy Woven Fish Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easy Woven Fish Craft | A fabulous fish craft, with a woven element that adds colour and is great for building fine motor skills. The perfect kids crafts for an Under the Sea unit! #underthesea #easycrafts #kidscrafts #fishcrafts

This delightful Easy Woven Fish Craft is perfect for little hands. The weaving process is great for building on fine motor skills and the results are rather pretty too!

A tactile craft that can be personalised and adapted to suit varying abilities. Very young children may prefer to simply cut and stick paper scales onto their fish. Some could also paint their fish as we have done so with a previous butterfly craft, which looks great against the paper weave and could add another dynamic to the fish – this could work well paired with the book Rainbow Fish.

This colourful addition works perfectly within the home or classroom – could you imagine an under the sea themed bulletin board filled with these fanciful fish? and with our handy template (supplied towards the end of this post), the craft couldn’t be easier!

Easy Woven Fish Craft: Materials

Cardstock
Gluestick
Scissors
Black Marker
Cupcake Liners

While the strips can be cut by hand, a paper cutter is much easier and less time-consuming!

Step 3.  Fold the fish in half and cut strips into the paper.

Leave about an inch of paper all around the sides so that the paper does not tear while being weaved.

Step 4. Unfold the fish and set aside

Step 5. Cut strips of coloured cardstock about half an inch wide.

Step 6. Weave the strips of paper in and out of the fish.

Step 7. Cut the excess paper off the sides and glue to prevent the strips from moving.

Step 8. Cut out the big circular eye from the template and transfer it onto the woven fish.

Step 10. Glue the fins onto the back of the fish.

Easy CD Snail Craft

This easy peasy CD Snail Craft is the brain child of my 7 year old little lovely. I adore how she utilised the craft materials to create unique and funky shells for her snails!

While on the surface this is a simple kids craft, there’s an amazing amount of fine motor work happening with painting, sticking, threading and weaving. Kids get to enjoy the creative freedom of decorating their CD’s and can simply play with their designs.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easy CD Snail Craft | A super fun and funky snail craft for kids!

As you can see, my daughter transformed CD’s into looms for weaving as well simply dipping the yarn into glue to create a spiral. And with each creation, she has beautifully demonstrated this crafts versatility – can you imagine how wonderful a complete display of CD Snails would look within a class environment?

And since we’re living in a digital age, I’m you’ll have a few redundant CD’S/DVD’s stashed away, so shall we get crafting?

Next, cut out some ‘snail’ shapes and glue the shells onto its back.

Add a googly eye, smiley face and a pipe cleaner for what’s commonly referred to as the snails feelers (but they’re actually the snails eyes!).

Weather Changing Cloud Craft

Here in the south west of England, our April showers have extended into May and we’ve had lots of conversations about the rain and why it falls, how does it fall, what creates thunder storms and so on, which has inspired our weather changing cloud craft.

Our cloud is a fun and interactive play and create activity for preschoolers. It has proven to be a great way to extend weather observations and engage in weather themed dialogue with the kids, and above all else, it’s a little bit of arty crafty fun for a rainy afternoon.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Weather Changing Cloud Craft

With our free printable, our craft couldn’t be easier and with just a few basic materials the kids will be making rain clouds in no time!

Here’s what you need…

Weather Changing Cloud Craft

*This post contains affiliates*

Stock Card – White, Blue and Yellow
Grey Paint
Cotton Wool Balls
Blue Yarn
PVA Glue
Split Pins
Stapler

Download our free template here: Weather Changing Cloud Template

To see our weather changing cloud craft in action, check out our nifty video below and if you LOVE what you see, sign up to a new YouTube channel to keep up to date with our latest video crafts.

Weather Changing Cloud Craft Tutorial:

To begin, cut out a large cloud shape from the white card.

Download Weather Changing Cloud Template. Cut out the individual parts and then draw them around them on the yellow and blue card to create the sun, lightening bolt and raindrops.

You will notice that we’ve created a half sun…this wasn’t a mistake! the half sun will allow it to be hidden for when the rain falls and lightening bolts!

Create a little ‘rain’ pocket at the back of the cloud using left over card (check out the video to see how) and table to secure.

Attach the sun and lightening bolt with split pins, give them a spin and twist and they should move!

To create the rain, simple glue the rain drops onto a piece of blue yarn and attach to the cloud with staples.

The back of the weather cloud should now look a little like this…

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Weather Changing Cloud Craft

Next, conceal the staples and split pins with cotton wool balls. They will add a puffy cloudy texture and then add some grey paint to the area near the lightening bolt and rain.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Weather Changing Cloud Craft

Next it’s play time!

Drop the rain and lightening bolt to create a storm.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Weather Changing Cloud Craft

And then tuck them away for when the sun comes out!

It didn’t occur to me until after we completed the weather changing cloud craft that a rainbow would have been a nice addition to the activity! Well I say me, it was actually my daughter who painted that when the sun and rain combine, there’s always a rainbow to be seen in the sky…

I take note for next time, but maybe this is something you could add!

Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Today I’m showing you a classic Easter craft with a super cute added surprise. This paper plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise craft is easy and fun to make, and perfect for little hands to assemble themselves!

I adore the simplicity of the craft and it’s one those that i’m sure you’ve tried as a child yourself.

The Easter Egg offers a fabulously open-ended element where preschoolers can paint and stick till their hearts content, with an opportunity to practice their cutting skills.

And if you’re looking for an activity for a local toddler or preschool group, then the minimal set-up will be appealing.

Sound good?

Let’s get started!

Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Paper Plate
Construction Paper
Metallic Paint
Ribbon
Split Pin/Paper Fastener
PVA Glue
Scissors

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

To begin, shape the Paper Plate to resemble an oval ‘egg’ shape and then remove the top with some zig-zag cutting.

In reality, this might be a little challenging for children to do, but they will love having a go and whatever the outcome – it will be PERFECT!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Now for the best bit…

To decorate our Easter Egg we started out with painting some simple metallic stripes.

I love the glittery sheen of the metallic paint and it seems to have an ‘Easter’ feel to it, of course it’s not necessary for you to run out and buy metallic paint – I’m a huge advocate for simply using the materials you have available at home.

That said, i’m sure the kids will have their own ideas about how to paint their Easter Eggs!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Once the paint had dried, we added some pretty ribbon from scrap box.

Buttons, sequins, tissue paper, scrap paper etc would work just as well!

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

To add the movable lid, secure the two parts with a split pin – this will allow the lid to move up and down to create a ‘hatching egg’.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

The chick couldn’t be easier to make and is simply a combination of paper and scrap felt, stuck together with a little PVA glue.

Arty Crafty Kids | Craft | Easter | Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise

Using a piece of sticky tape, add the chick to the Easter Egg.

And that’s it, you should now have one super adorable Paper Plate Easter Egg Chick Surprise for the kids to play with.

If the kids enjoyed this paper plate craft, they may also love our Pop-Up Chick Craft and Pop-Up Bunny Craft, which uses similar materials.

Winter Bubble Wrap Tree Kids Craft

Winter is on its way and snow is expected to follow.

Well that’s what my kids think and if yours are anything like mine, then they’ll be super excited by the prospect of snow.

Unfortuantely, there’s  a great big ‘but’ that’s going to burst that Winter bubble… living down south (U.K) we rarely experience snow!

So when it falls it’s a massive occassion, so we live in hope and maybe this year we’ll see more than a dusting of snow.

Until then, we’ll allow that snow enthusiasm to seep into our Winter crafts.

Kickstarting our Winter crafting with this easy peasy Winter Bubble Wrap Tree.

Isn’t it sweet?

Materials: Winter Bubble Wrap Tree

A Sheet of Blue Card
Black Paint
White Paint
Bubble Wrap
Paint Brush, Scissors

Let’s Make It!

The first step is to paint the tree.

Depending on the age of your child, you may want to help them out. Obviously you don’t need me to tell you that kid-made is best, however it turns out!

Just don’t worry if your kids version doesn’t look ‘tree’ like…

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Winter Craft - Winter Bubble Wrap Tree

Next, paint the individual bubbles white – this is a great excersise for developing fine motor skills.

Alternatively, grab yourself a toilet roll, the bubble wrap and an elastic band, and create a stamp!

Simply place the bubble wrap onto the end of the TP Roll and secure with an elastic band. Younger children may find this method a little easier!

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Winter Craft - Winter Bubble Wrap Tree

Place the painted bubble wrap onto the tree and press down firmly.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Winter Craft - Winter Bubble Wrap Tree

Remove the bubble wrap to reveal the snow!

Some children may create perfect circles, others may get a little smudged.

Either way, the results will be perfect!

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Winter Craft - Winter Bubble Wrap Tree

Repeat the previous steps and fill the tree with snowy prints!

Another adaption would be to swap the bubble wrap for finger prints, lego or anything else that’s circular and to hand!

I hope you love our Bubble Wrap Tree and if you would like to further inspriation, check out our Winter Handprint Tree!

And that concludes our Winter Craft tutorial!

This idea works really well at home and be a great addition to a Winter unit at preschool or school.

Using a clean jar lid, squeeze a thin layer of glue into the lid until the whole surface area is covered.

Be careful not to add too much glue, as it will never dry… we learnt the hard way!

Add a thin layer of glitter until the glue is covered with sparkles.

Add the embellishments – they could be buttons, sequins, pom-poms or even cut up tissue paper!

And now for the adult bit! Leave the lids to dry and then add a ribbon for hanging to the back, using a strong glue. I used a hot glue gun, but a strong adhesive will be fine.

I hope your kids LOVE this easy Christmas craft and their baubles look beautiful, glistening on the Christmas Tree.

No Sew Felt Owl Finger Puppets

Wowee where do I begin? These adorable Owl Finger Puppets have gone down a storm in my owl mad household.

For one, they’re NO-SEW, which makes them incredibly easy to make and can be put together within minutes – perfect for people like me who are less inclined to sew.

They have  entertained my kids for HOURS.

Inspiring some incredible made-up stories, with my preschooler happily chatting to and making up voices for her finger puppets.

She has adapted nursery rhymes to include her little “owly Owls” and sung the revised versions to her baby brother. THIS, I can tell you, made me all mushy inside!

Before I go into full gush mode, I had no idea that my kids would love these owl finger puppets as much as they do.

And the more they play, the more potential I see.

For example, they could become fun gifts for kids alongside a relatable picture book. They may also help a reluctant child engage with a book on a different level or simply encourage some good Ol’ fashioned imaginative play.

Sound good? Here’s what you need…

Add the felt wings, eyes, beak and buttons.

We included the buttons to add an alternative texture and pattern. You could swap the buttons for patterned paper or fabric.

The best thing about hot glue, is that dries really quickly and is very strong! So within no time my little lady was able to start playing with her owl finger puppets.

If you don’t have a hot glue gun (US Link / UK Link) to hand, you could try this craft with another strong adhesive or adapt it into an sewing project for kids by using a simple running stitch.
