Paper Plate Santa

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Easy Chrsitmas Craft - Paper Plate Santa - Super cute and Super Adorable Paper Plate Santa - An easy and fun Christmas Craft for Kids. Perfect for little hands and independent crafting.

Throughout the entire Christmas period I have agonized (a little dramatic I know) over how to put together the BEST paper plate Santa.

I wanted to make it simple, so kids can actually make it without too much (if any) interference.

It obviously had to be super cute and not too fussy.

In my mind, a paper plate Santa had to be exactly that, without too many add-ons or materials.

And with just a few days to go until the big day, I think we’ve achieved an easy, fun and utterly adorable paper plate Santa – what to do you think?

Here’s how you can make it at home!

Red, Black, White and Orange Paint

Cotton Wool
White Pom-pom

DIRECTIONS: Paper Plate Santa

Paint half of the paper plate a skin tone ( by mixing white with a small amount of orange or pink) and the other half a vibrant red, with a curve around the edge of the paper plate to create a ‘hat’ shape.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Easy Chrsitmas Craft - Paper Plate Santa

Add a big red nose.

Between the border of the skin coloured paint and red, add plenty of PVA glue.

Separate and thin out the cotton wool and spread along the trail of glue, leaving some space to create the appearance of a hanging Santa hat.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Easy Chrsitmas Craft - Paper Plate Santa

Add some PVA glue to the bottom of the paper plate.

Add more cotton wool and this time fluff it up a little to create a nice fluffy beard.

Paper Plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft

Arty Crafty Kids - Christmas - Paper Plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft

“Rudolph the red nose reindeer, had a very shiny nose” or a very fluffy nose, like our paper plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft.

I adore the simplicity of this festive craft and it’s one that children will be able to make and assemble themselves.

Using just a few materials that you’re likely to already have stashed away in the craft cupboard, it could be set up very easily.

But first, you will need to pop outside and collect some antler twigs!

My kids thought I was crazy when I suggested that we go on an antler hunt…

Luckily they embraced the idea and had a blast rummaging through the leaves in pursuit of the perfect antler twig!

HOW-TO: Paper Plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft

Arty Crafty Kids - Christmas - Paper Plate Rudolph

First paint the Paper Plate brown with either brown paint or encourage the kids to do some colour-mixing to make brown – in my experience, kids rarely have trouble making brown!

TIP: To ensure the paper plate doesn’t get too soggy and dries quickly, try sponge painting!

Cut the Paper Plate to shape and cut out two ears with the off-cuts.

Arty Crafty Kids - Christmas - Paper Plate Rudolph

Attach the ears and twigs using some tape.

TIP: Masking tape is a great alternative to sellotape as kids are able to easily tear or cut pieces off for themselves. It’s particularly handy for kids who enjoy junk modeling

Finish off with some googly eyes and a big red nose!

And ta-da…your kids should now have a super cute paper plate Rudolph Reindeer Craft!

Twig Christmas Tree Ornament

Arty Crafty Kids | Seasonal | Christmas Nature Craft | Rustic Twig Christmas Tree Ornament

How cute is this Twig Christmas Tree Ornament?

Can you believe it can be made by  kids and we’re not talking Big Kids. With a pinch of prep, these charming twiggy Christmas Trees can be made by little kids (as demonstrated by my three-year-old).

There are a few things that I LOVE about this Christmas craft (aside from the obvious cuteness) :

  • It’s easy
  • Requires few materials
  • Focusses a little ones attention
  • Great for fine motor skills!

AND it’s inspired by Julia Donaldson’s Christmas must read – Stick Man

I have lost count of the number of times we’ve read Stick Man and when it came to choosing a book for this years Kid-Made Book Inspired Christmas Ornament series, it seemed like an obvious choice.

If you’re not familiar with the story of Stick Man, then you should definitely check it out! ItStick’s a fun bouncy story that follows the misadventures of Stick Man, whom simply wants to be reunited with his ‘stick family love’ before Christmas.

So the next time you’re out with the kids, collect some twigs and then settle down (with a cuppa) to a reading of Stick Man, followed by some Christmas craftiness.

DIRECTIONS: Twig Christmas Tree Ornament

To get started, you will need twigs and lots of them!

So pop outside with the kids and collect a variety of straight twigs – the smoother the better!

Our rustic Twig Christmas Tree Ornament is kid-made and inspired by Julia Donaldson's Stick Man. An easy Christmas craft for kids, that's great fine motor practice.

Snap the twigs to size and arrange into a Christmas Tree shape.

Cut out a long piece of felt.

Next, add a number of symmetrical holes to the felt by folding the end of the felt and cutting a little snip.

Arty Crafty Kids | Seasonal | Christmas Nature Craft | Rustic Twig Ornament | Our rustic Twig Christmas Tree Ornament is kid-made and inspired by Julia Donaldson's Stick Man. An easy Christmas craft for kids, that's great fine motor practice.

Now make a second hole.

The scissors demonstrate where the twig will be threaded.

Depending on the age of your child, you can make the craft less or more challenging by creating smaller or larger threading holes.

Repeat the previous step all the way along the felt, leaving about an inch at the top.

Now for the fun bit!

Start threading – encourage your child to arrange the twigs in size order.

If you have an older child, maybe they could measure them?

Fill the threading holes with the twigs.

And keep going until the twigs have been used.

Adjust the twigs to create a “Christmas Tree” shape.

Fold the remaining felt over to create a hanging hole – secure with glue.

Finish off with a button or embellishment of your kiddos choice.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Scrap Paper and Button DIY Christmas Cards

These gorgeous DIY Christmas Cards are incredibly easy to make and are perfect for kids to make themselves.

We set up our own creative station at the dining table using  pre-made cards, buttons and scrap paper and turned our Christmas card making into an activity for the whole family.

It was great fun and if you intend to send multiple homemade Christmas Cards, then this might be the way forward.

DIRECTIONS: DIY Christmas Cards

As my family live far and wide, all of our Christmas need to be posted rather than hand delivered and for this reason, I used a pack of coloured pre-made cards and envelopes.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Scrap Paper and Button DIY Christmas Cards

Using straight strips of scrap paper, we created four designs: A Christmas Tree, Bauble, Star and Snowflake.

This tutorial will show you how to make a snowflake, which will give you the basic method to create the other designs.

To begin, simply cut a four strips of coloured scrap paper.

Using PVA glue, stick the paper onto the card to create a cross and then a star.

Using a selection of buttons , stick them directly onto the snowflake.

Add as many buttons as you like and maybe a few sequins for some extra sparkle!

While my elder daughter favoured simplicity, my preschooler preferred a colour and some random positioning, which highlights the beauty of this simple craft – it’s open-ended and inclusive!

Whether you’re a toddler, preschooler, tween or a bigger kid (aka an adult), it’s one that everyone will enjoy.

And if you need any more convincing, our DIY Christmas Cards will give those little hands a fine motor work out!

Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Chrismas Tree

I am really excited to be sharing our Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree activity with you today.

It strikes me as funny that this activity evolved from girls balancing pebbles at the dinner table rather than eating their meal!

Sometimes you just to have to go with the flow and actually, while they were playing there was some serious learning going on.

The aim of the game is the stack all the pebbles, fill the “branches” with sequin baubles and finish off by balancing a pom-pom on top.

It’s trickier than it looks!

Through play, they were developing reasoning and fine motor skills. Hand and eye-coordination, as well as problem solving skills.

All applied using a little creativity, with a pinch of patience and determination – as there was a lot of trial and error involved!

This is one those activities, we’ll be bagging up and taking it out and about with us. It’s a great to keep the kids entertained with something fun, but I have to warn you…

You will find yourself having a go or two yourself!

DIRECTIONS: Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Activity Christmas Tree

Start with a trip to the local beach.

Have a play and search for flat smooth pebbles of various sizes and when you get home, either leave them as they are or paint the pebbles using some acrylic paint.

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree | This pebble stacking fine motor Chrismas Tree activity is an awesome challenging game that encourages problem solving, hand eye-cordinaton and fine motor skills!

Lay the pebbles out, along with sequins and pom-pom.

At this point, I left my three old to play without any instruction.

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree | This pebble stacking fine motor Chrismas Tree activity is an awesome challenging game that encourages problem solving, hand eye-cordinaton and fine motor skills!

She quickly worked out that she needed to start with the biggest pebble and work her way up.

Shape was also important and cakes adjusted the positioning of each stone to find the best fit.

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree | This pebble stacking fine motor Chrismas Tree activity is an awesome challenging game that encourages problem solving, hand eye-cordinaton and fine motor skills!

The sequins add to the fine motor development and enhance the challenge!

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree | This pebble stacking fine motor Chrismas Tree activity is an awesome challenging game that encourages problem solving, hand eye-cordinaton and fine motor skills!

The pom-pom is the trickiest element and I can assure you, the pebbles all came crashing down time and time again.

But that’s ok, because ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again!’

Arty Crafty Kids | Play | Fine Motor Pebble Stacking Christmas Tree | This pebble stacking fine motor Chrismas Tree activity is an awesome challenging game that encourages problem solving, hand eye-cordinaton and fine motor skills!

It’s a game of perseverance and as you can see, Cakes had so much building her Christmas Tree.

It’s amazing that such a simple game can have so many developmental benefits and it can be varied in a number of ways. For example Emma at Adventures of Adam adds a colour sorting element with her rainbow pebbles – perfect for colour recognition!

I hope your kiddies enjoy our fine motor pebble stacking Christmas tree and if you a need a reason to visit the local peach or park, then here’s a good one!

Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

Arty Crafty Kids | Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft | Christmas Crafts do not get cuter than these cheeky little Elves! A super easy Christmas craft for kids.

I absolutely adore how this Christmas Elf craft turned out.

Cute with a pinch of cheekiness; exactly how an Elf should look!

As always, I like to keep crafts simple and our elf craft is definitely simple, using materials you’re likely to already have stashed away in the recycling or craft box.

So shall we get started?

MATERIALS: Christmas Elf Craft

Cardboard Tube
Acrylic Kid Friendly Paint
Coloured Paper
Pom-pom’s
Yellow felt (or paper)
Stappler
PVA Glue
Fine tipped paintbrush (or sharpie)
Scissors

DIRECTONS: Christmas Elf Craft

rty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

During our trial run of this Elf Craft, we painted the the cardboard tube and then snipped into the tube.

I would advise not doing this as the paint chipped and it was much harder to cut!

So, to begin… let’s make some elf ears!

Cut into the top of the tube at a slant and then fold the cardboard to create a triangle shape in the middle.

Repeat on the otherside of the tube.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

Next paint the cardboard tube using some kid friendly acrylic paints.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

Add some detail.

We used a fine tipped paint brush to create facial features, however this could easily be swapped for some fine tipped sharpies!

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

As you can see, you should  have two disinct Elf ears by folding the cardbaord tube into itself.

Arty Crafty Kids - Seasonal - Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft

Using a piece of coloured paper, draw and cut out a large circle and cut the circle in half.

Fold half of the circle round to create a cone shape and before stappling together, make sure it fits snuggly onto the cardboard tube, with the ears sticking out and the two triangles in middle section covered.

Add a pom-pom to the tip of the hat using some PVA glue.

Arty Crafty Kids | Cardboard Tube Christmas Elf Craft | Christmas Crafts do not get cuter than these cheeky little Elves! A super easy Christmas craft for kids.

To finish off  our Chritmas Elf Craft we added a collor, using a  strip of yellow felt stuck with PVA glue.

And that’s it!

Since Father Chrstmas needs the help of more than one, why not make a few more and perhaps create an entire scene with a cardboard tube Rudolph and some snowmen?

If you’re feeling eally creative, you could attempt a Santa using the same technique.

Using a clean jar lid, squeeze a thin layer of glue into the lid until the whole surface area is covered.

Be careful not to add too much glue, as it will never dry… we learnt the hard way!

Add a thin layer of glitter until the glue is covered with sparkles.

Add the embellishments – they could be buttons, sequins, pom-poms or even cut up tissue paper!

And now for the adult bit! Leave the lids to dry and then add a ribbon for hanging to the back, using a strong glue. I used a hot glue gun, but a strong adhesive will be fine.

I hope your kids LOVE this easy Christmas craft and their baubles look beautiful, glistening on the Christmas Tree.
