Autumn Handprint Tree

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Autumn is a gorgeous, colourful season that never fails to get the creative juices flowing and if you’re looking for an opportunity to explore simple colour-mixing techniques within a seasonal theme, then this Autumn Handprint Tree art project is the one for you.

Children can observe the natural change that comes with Autumn and attempt to recreate what they see within their art.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Ask questions:

  • How much Red and Yellow do you need to make Orange?
  • How do you make different tones of Orange (Yellow, Red, Green)?
  • How do you make Brown?

This simple process of trial and error is a fabulous learning exercise, with an emphasis on problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking (mixing and mentally measuring colours to achieve the desired tone).

And of course, it’s wonderful for creativity!

Autumn Handprint Tree Art:  Tutorial

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 1. Using a pencil, draw a faint line around the hand and arm of your child.

If your child is of preschool age or older, they may want to have a go themselves.

Next, paint the print brown.

Alternatively, simply draw around the arm directly onto a piece of brown paper and cut out the shape and stick.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 2. Time for the really fun bit – colour mixing!

This is s chance for kiddos to explore colour by experimenting with primary colours to create Autumn shades of red, yellow, orange and green, oh and of course brown (every toddler can make brown!).

Using a q-tip, end of a pencil or even your child’s finger, begin adding dots around the tree.

Arty Crafty Kids - Art - Art Ideas for Kids - Autumn Handprint Tree

Step 3. Build the dots with different colours. Try overlapping the dots and see the print transform into an Autumn Handprint Tree!

Since writing this post in 2015, I have seen hundreds of Autumn Handprint Trees completed by children from all over the world and it’s established itself as a favourite tree art project with teachers!

Thank you for all the amazing feedback. Every photo brings a smile to my face!

Your Arty Crafty Kids may find it useful to refer to this

Basic Colour Chart throughout the process of Cool Handprint Art.

This particular art project offers Arty Crafty Kids with an opportunity to explore and experiment with colour-mixing; mixing beyond the secondary colours to create various shades of their favourite colours!

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 1: Download a template of your choice (the sign-up form can be found towards the end of this post) and print.

Using a pencil, ask your Arty Crafty Kids to draw around their hand as many times as they like.

Create clear single prints or layer, forming crisscrossing hands.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 2: Add paint.

To make the most of this colour-mixing opportunity, I would recommend offering your Arty Crafty Kids just Red, Yellow and Blue paint, with White and Black.

Using the colour reference chart, ask your Arty Crafty Kids to play with the colours.

Ask them questions:

What are warm colours?

A: Warm colours are hues from red through yellow – consider the colours in sunsets

What are cool colours?

A: Cool Colours are hues from blue-green through blue-violet – consider the shades of the sea or a twilight setting

To explore the contrast of warm and cool tones, we focussed on the hands as warm and the background as cool.

Mixing Red and Yellow, begin creating the first warm or cool tones.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 3: Following both the handprint lines and segmentation of the template, handprint will begin to pop from the page.

Continue colour-mixing and painting until the handprints are complete and then add contrasting hues of blue and green to the background.

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 4: Continue colour-mixing and experimenting until the paper is filled with beautiful colours.

How many new colours can your Arty Crafty Kids make?

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Cool Handprint Art, exploring warm and cool shades. Great for basic colour-mixing! #artforkids #kidsart #artclass

Step 5: As well as creating an amazing piece of handprint art, your Arty Crafty Kids will be mentally measuring quantities of paint to create their desired tones and assessing the cause and effect of their choices.

For instance:

How much red and yellow do they need to mix to create orange?

Can they create the same shade twice?

What happens when black or white is added to a primary colour?

Your Arty Crafty Kids will naturally work through these questions as they progress through the art project, which in my opinion, is where the real creative magic happens.

Their artistic choices will be based on the findings of their creative experiments and with every mix, every stroke of the paintbrush, they will learn something new.

So if their colour-mixing results in a brownish looking mess, don’t stop the process. Instead, offer new palette (if desired) and see what happens…

Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations: Tutorial

Step 1: Create the heart canvas’ by cutting out hearts shapes from a piece of cardboard.

Step 2: Hand over to your Arty Crafty Kids, supplying them with paint and materials to explore.

Once the children have painted a base layer of colour, perhaps they could experiement with stamping.

They could try shaping paper rolls into hearts and creating heart prints.

Splat painting can be controlled by brushing a blunt knife against the brush.

Bubble wrap is fabulous for prints.

And bottle tops are great for stamping!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 3: Perhaps add some washi tape?

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 4: Or even a little glitter.

To keep the glitter under control, we have a dedicated glitter tray and with a few boundaries in place, this helps to keep it contained and fun to use!

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 5: Add tassels to the bottom of the hearts (this step is entirely optional and can also be substituted with pom-poms if desired).

Tassels are very easy to make.

Simply spread your fingers out and wrap some embroidery thread around your fingers.

Gently slip the hooped thread off your fingers and cut one end of the hoop to create a bunch.

Remove two threads from the bunch and tie one around the centre, leaving two loose ends.

Fold the bunch over at the point of the knot and tie the second piece of thread around the bunch, wrapping it around several times as shown above and secure with a knot.

Arty Crafty Kids | Crafts for Kids | Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations - A process led heart project for kids using recycled cardboard #hearts #kidscrafts #easycraftsforkids

Step 6: Fasten the tassel to the bottom of the heart, piercing a hole with a hole punch or round head pliers.

Before securing the tassel to the heart, add a few decorative beads to the thread.

To transform the hearts into decorations, they could be hung individually on the wall using string or thread together to create a unique heart garland.

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy the process of creating their Recycled Cardboard Heart Decorations.

Well, not anymore! This Cool Cat Newspaper Art Project for Kids is not just any old cat…

It’s a cat with attitude.

Paper Tube Fireworks Art Project for Kids

This paper tube Fireworks Art Project for Kids is entirely child-led and with Bonfire Night just a few weeks away followed by New Years Celebrations, kids will love creating their own fireworks display using this simple technique that’s been used within preschools for years.

Using recycled materials as a fireworks stamp and newspaper clippings to add an urban/country landscape or famous landmark, the paintings will be transformed into a complete fireworks scene that will resemble the New Years celebrations from around the world. It could be personalized to your child’s location by using a photo of your home, town or perhaps the newspaper could be substituted with a hand-drawn image.

However you choose to present this activity, I’m sure the Arty Crafty Kids will have their own ideas and will have a blast cutting, sticking, painting and stamping!

Bleeding Crepe Paper Art

While Bleeding Crepe Paper Art produces cool abstract and colourful prints, it falls into the genre of ‘process art’. So what is process art? to put it simply, it’s all about the creative process rather than the end product. All too often (myself included) it’s easy to get fixated on the end result, whereas process art gives children the freedom to create without a preconceived idea of how their craft ‘should’ look.

It’s more of a play, experiment and let’s see what happens approach, and this is where the magic happens.  With imaginations captured, children will quickly master their tools, learn cause and effect through experimentation, create unique masterpieces and have a jolly good time doing it!

And from a practical perspective, process art tends not to be material intensive, making quick and easy to set up – perfect when you’re dealing with short attention spans!

So let’s talk about Bleeding Crepe Paper Art…

Leave the crepe paper to settle for 5-15min.

Carefully remove the crepe paper to reveal the interesting and textured prints underneath.

And ta-da, it’s as easy as that!

Encourage the Arty Crafty Kids to experiment with the water, the amount of crepe paper they use, the colour combinations and the duration they leave the crepe paper to stand before removing it.

Will the colours appear bolder or lighter?

Can they create new colours by layering primary colours?

What will happen if they gather the soggy crepe paper and give it a squeeze?

I hope the Arty Crafty Kids love the process and create some spectacular prints. We’re planning to use our prints to create butterflies and Autumn leaves, so watch this space! For more fun and easy process art ideas, take a look at our Yarn Art Process, Cling Film Art and Bubble Wrap Printing.

Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft

Leaves are beginning to fall, which means only one thing…Autumn is on its way! Autumn is the season of colour and it’s by far my favourite season. Who doesn’t love scrunching through leaves, the crisp air and the blanket of beautiful colour that sweeps the sky line. Today’s Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft has been created with young children and preschoolers in mind. The bubble wrap adds a tactile textured element to craft and the handy printable allows children to dive straight in – perfect for short attention spans!

Children can observe the natural change that comes with Autumn and attempt to recreate what they see within their art.

Throughout the process, encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to mix their own colours and describe what happens when the colours mix.

Bubble Wrap Autumn Tree Craft: Tutorial

Step 1. Print the free Tree Template (complete the sign-up form to be referred) onto a piece of white card stock. I prefer to use card stock for kids art projects for one simple reason – it’s durable and doesn’t turn into a soggy mess when the kids (inevitably) use an excess of paint!

Step 2. Mix the Autumn colours using the primary colours. This is a great way for children to explore colour shades beyond the secondary colours.

Apply the paint directly to the bubbles – this will create clear and crisp circular prints!

For your reference, refer to our basic colour-mixing chart:

Step 3. Turn the bubble wrap over and press down firmly.

Step 4. Gently peel the bubble wrap away from the paper to reveal the prints. Each piece of bubble wrap can be reused 2 or 3 times before the need for additional paint.

Autumn Leaf Painting

Arty Crafty Kids | Art Ideas for Kids | Autumn Leaf Painting - exploring basic colour-mixing principles to create Autumn shades and hues #autumnart #artforkids #kidsart

This gorgeous Autumn Leaf Painting project is an exploration of basic colour-mixing principles, with the aim to recreate the Autumn hues and shades as observed by Arty Crafty Kids.

  • Can you make the same colour twice?

Kids will naturally adopt a process of trial and error to create their desired colours, and this simple process has many positive learning outcomes:

  • Mathematical Thinking  – Arty Crafty Kids will be mentally measuring and testing paint ratios to create new colours
  • Problem Solving – The process of working out ‘HOW’ to create a new colour and replicate the shades of the leaves they’ve collected is problem-solving in action.
  • Language – Simply talking about their processes and finding appropriate words to describe their new colours helps develop vocabulary.

And all of these outcomes combined stimulate and enhance children’s imaginations and creativity!

Step 1. Head outside and gather as many leaves as possible.

Variety is key here, so have a good rummage and find different shapes, sizes and colours!

Once your Arty Crafty Kids have a bag or two filled with leaves, start painting!

Using three separate plates, place one of the primary colours on each (Red, Yellow & Blue).  This will allow plenty of room for colour-mixing and painting!

For reference, take a look at our basic colour-mixing chart:

https://www.artycraftykids.com/product/arty-crafty-kids-club/

And begin mixing colours.

Sponge painting around the leaves may take a little practice, especially for smaller hands, but there’s no rush and the process is all about playing and exploring.

Step 2. Moving on from the play to create a complete piece of leaf art is very easy to do.

Position a number of leaves of different sizes and shapes on top of the canvas.

One by one, begin sponge painting around each leaf, adding different colours and tones as you work around the leaf.

Once complete, gently peel the leaf away to reveal the silhouette.

Step 3. Repeat the above process until the canvas is full of leafy silhouettes.

Once complete, begin filling in the remaining negative space with more Autumn colours, layering the paint to create additional depth and texture.

Step 4.  Next, add a leaf print within some of the silhouettes.

This is a really fun way to play with negative and positive space. In art terms, negative space is the surrounding area of a point of interest. In this instance, our leaves.

The notion of positive and negative space is naturally explored in this project and one your Arty Crafty Kids will consider without knowing the official terminology or theory – they’ll be too busy doing!
