Clay Footprint Keepsake

Arty Crafty Kids - Craft - Baby Footprint Keepsake - Clay Footprint Keepsake Craft

Sharing is caring!

My baby boy is 6 months!

Where has the time gone…?

I’m a huge fan of keepsake crafts, more so now that my girls are older.

They love looking back at their clay keepsakes, comparing against their larger hands and feet, and chatting about what they were like as babies.

With Baby D reaching his half birthday, now’s the time for another clay footprint keepsake.

From inside the womb, I’ve always referred to him as my little twinkle toes.

He has always been a kicker and regularly pushed against my pregnant tummy to show us his tiny little feet – I wish I had a picture to show you!

So while my girls have their feet in pretty pink hearts, this little twinkle toes theme seemed a fitting alternative to what I would consider a classic keepsake craft.

Let’s Make It!

Roll the clay out onto a firm surface with grease proof paper, creating an even depth of about 1cm.

Lower your child’s foot onto the clay and press down firmly (obviously not too firmly).

It will be helpful if you had a second person to help with the prints, ideally an adult! With one person can holding the baby, while the other takes the prints.

Remove the excess clay by cutting it into a shape of your choice and add a hanging hole.

Leave to dry in a warm place for 24hrs or until completely firm – you may need to turn the clay plaque over a few times to ensure it dries evenly.

Using white acrylic paint, carefully fill your child’s footprint in and leave to dry.

Using a contrasting acrylic colour, paint the remainder of the clay plaque.

Personalise the clay footprint keepsake with a white chalk marker, add a few embellishments and string.

Throughout my 6 years of creating clay keepsakes with the kids, I have used salt dough, home-made clay, microwave and oven baked clay and so far, the air-dry clay we’ve used for this clay footprint keepsake has produced the best results and has been the easiest to use!

I hope you have a similar experience and produce something beautiful to remember your own little twinkle toes by!
